NEW! Organic Cotton Face Mask
ORGANIC, WASHABLE, REUSABLE
NEW FILTER-READY DESIGN
America has a shortage of face masks as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. So we are doing our part to answer the call by refocusing a large part of our Cut & Sew Department to the production of face masks. Avocado organic face masks are GOTS certified finished products — one of the few certified face masks available within the United States. They are not medical-grade N95 face masks or considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). However, they can accommodate your own particulate filter, which can be easily inserted within the pocket.
Note that the CDC recommends that all Americans wear a cloth mask or covering when going out in public because of mounting evidence that infected people without symptoms can spread the virus. They are now mandatory in many areas in the U.S. Our organic, washable, and reusable face masks are intended to make wearing a mask accessible, convenient, and environmentally responsible.
FOR THECOMMON GOOD
Avocado was one of the first brands to start making face masks. Our masks are still some of the only 100% GOTS organic certified face masks available anywhere in the U.S. Our production team has reorganized to meet the critical demand. Although our masks are no longer a non-profit initiative (as of 4/29), we still offer low-cost pricing (that includes the most appropriate shipping) to make our organic face masks affordable and accessible.
ORGANIC & NON-TOXIC
Our washable face masks are made with only 100% GOTS organic certified canvas. We use two 7-ounce layers for structure and proper airflow. The cotton canvas has a durable herringbone pattern and features a STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI). No plastics, microfibers, elastic, or chemicals. Tie-straps create a snug fit. And because they only use 100% natural materials, they're even biodegradable.
WASHABLE & REUSABLE
FOR ADULTS & KIDS
Our Avocado face mask is machine-washable. That's because we stitch them out of 100% organic cotton canvas. Wash routinely, depending on use. According to the CDC, a standard machine wash will disinfect and clean your mask. Wash with cold water. Tumble dry on low or air dry. Expect some shrinking due to the natural fibers. Our packs of four reusable face masks are intended to make daily use easier to manage by providing enough masks for some to be in the wash while others are in use.
FILTER-READY, YET BREATHABLE
Our new and improved face mask design incorporates an internal pocket neatly sewn along one long side of the mask, where a third-party particulate filter (not included) can be inserted, such as a coffee filter. These are optional, and not essential. This filter-ready design does not sacrifice a snug fit and breathability, due to the flexible design and organic materials.
THE NEED FOR FACE MASKS
As coronavirus continues to spread, the biggest fear for medical professionals is a lack of personal protective equipment. Avocado’s face masks are not intended to replace the medical grade N95 masks, but since the disease spreads by respiratory droplets, they are still a barrier for those exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 or medical professionals attending to sick patients. The Center for Disease Control says that when no face masks are available, healthcare professionals should use homemade masks when treating patients with Covid-19. For those who are not healthcare providers, our face masks are an alternative that won’t reduce the availability of the medical-grade N95 face masks for those who need them most.
We Must Flatten the Curve
We all must do our part to prevent the spread of coronavirus and save lives. Current projections show that our medical system does not have the personnel, beds, or equipment to care for all who will need medical treatment. That’s why it’s essential to slow the spread of Covid-19 through social distancing and protective equipment. By “flattening the curve,” we can help ensure the infections and hospitalizations occur over a longer period of time and don’t overwhelm our medical system and cause a higher death rate.
BULK FACE MASK AND
HOSPITAL BEDDING NEEDS
Avocado is ready to help with bulk orders for medical, government, state, and local use. We're able to provide hospital-grade mattresses, shelter mattresses, quarantine mattresses, medical bedding needs, and more. All products are manufactured in California in our organic certified factories in accordance with OSHA guidelines.
275,000 FACE MASKSGOAL: 500,000
Avocado is proud to be one of the first brands to start making reusable organic face masks. Each mask is handmade, right in our GOTS organic certified factory in Los Angeles. Over the past month, we've produced and distributed more than 275,000 of them. Our output continues to increase as we make subtle design iterations. We are now producing 10,000 to 15,000 reusable masks each day. Our goal is to make 500,000 masks. At the same time, we have been juggling priorities — responding to the urgent needs from the medical community who are also in need of our non-medical masks. So we ask for your understanding and patience as we do our best to support this pressing need for everyone.
RADICALLY HONEST SPECS
Avocado Organic Cotton Face Masks
100% GOTS Organic Cotton
Our face masks feature a 200 thread-count (100-thread count in two 7-ounce layers, sewn together) of GOTS organic certified cotton canvas, responsibly and ethically sourced from India. It is actually the same durable organic cotton canvas that we use in our award-winning organic mattresses. The organic fabric is dense enough to offer protection and quality filtration, but breathable enough so it can be easily worn during a wide variety of activities. They are GOTS organic certified products.
Handmade in Los Angeles
Each face mask is sewn by hand in our Los Angeles factory, by our talented Cut & Sew department, which we've partially retooled to meet this urgent need.
Our organic cotton has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI), to ensure no harmful substances are present as a result of processing, to include banned substances, toxic chemicals, pesticides, and dyes.
Asthma and Allergy-Friendly Materials
Because we only use 100% GOTS organic certified cotton, our face masks are well-suited for anyone with asthma or allergies. Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic, comfortable, and breathable.
Carbon Negative + Renewable Energy
As a Climate Neutral Certified business, we offset more than 100% of our carbon emissions across all scopes of our business. And with our Clean Energy Partner Certification from Arcadia Power®, we are proud to proclaim that 100% of our energy is sourced from wind and solar.
We have evolved our face mask design with subtle updates since the outbreak of Covid-19 to improve fit, coverage and performance, and deliver a customer-requested, filter-ready design. You can find out more information about the design here.
Not Suitable for Children Under 2
The CDC's recommendation is to not place cloth face masks on children under the age of two, in order to prevent suffocation.
EcoHealth Alliance works around the world to predict and prevent the migration of deadly disease spilling over from animals into humans. Through research, training, and policy initiatives, they develop tools to stop pandemics and promote conservation. They are working with local partners in the U.S. and around the world to strengthen disease prevention and detection systems in hotspot regions where the threat of new outbreaks is highest and resources lowest. Together, we can support their mission.
