HEALTHIER FOR YOU,
AND THE PLANET
Before you buy that polyurethane or memory foam mattress (with that disconcerting chemical odor), consider these 13 compelling reasons why you should “go natural” with an Avocado Green Mattress. And while you do, please keep in mind: 84% of our verified customers rate us 5 stars!
1. HEALTH & WELLBEING
“INDOOR AIR QUALITY CAN BE 5 TIMES MORE POLLUTED THAN OUTDOOR AIR”
Study after study shows that the chemically treated materials commonly used in our manufacturing and building processes negatively impact human health. By releasing toxic chemicals, these materials contaminate our air, water, food supplies and environment through the processes of volatilization (off-gassing), abrasion, leaching and oxidation.
Who’s at risk? We all are. The toxins released get into our bodies by inhalation (the most common method), as well as ingestion, breastfeeding, hand-to-mouth contact and skin absorption. The associated health impacts can be significant. In addition to headaches and fatigue, research shows that increases in asthma, cancer, infertility, preterm birth, autism, obesity, lower IQ, memory and learning problems, and advanced puberty may be directly related to the release of toxic chemicals into our bodies and the environment.
But you can do something about it. We can live healthier by reducing our exposure to these contaminated materials. The simplest strategy is to keep them out of our homes in the first place. We can also help drive positive change by creating more awareness, transparency and demand for green products and sustainable manufacturing processes. Keep in mind: You will spend nearly one-third of your life in bed. Opting for an Avocado Green Mattress is one step forward toward a healthier you.
2. NATURAL & ORGANIC MATERIALS:
100% NATURAL LATEX
Instead of polyurethane foam, we rely on 100% natural latex made from tree-tapped and sustainable sources in Asia, made using the original Dunlop process. The manufacturing process is refreshingly simple and energy efficient: a mixture of natural latex tree sap and a small amount of natural ash is whipped into a frothy foam, then steam baked and washed. No synthetic rubber, polyurethane foams or Talalay latex are used. As a measure of quality and purity, the finished latex is eco-INSTITUT® certified by our manufacturer.
Instead of polyester fill, we use natural Joma® New Zealand Wool. Wool a natural resource with singular properties: it’s extremely breathable, odor resistant, fire resistant, and boasts exceptional thermoregulation properties. All of which means: wool helps you stay warm when the weather is cold and cool when the weather is hot. Best of all, Joma New Zealand Wool is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON
Instead of conventional cotton, which is one of the world’s most polluted crops, our ticking uses certified organic cotton. It’s grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic cotton offers a luxurious, breathable finish that absorbs and wicks away moisture. Better still, our organic cotton is also GOTS certified by our producer.
3. GREENGUARD GOLD CERTIFIED
The entire Avocado Green Mattress (and even our green pillows!) have been GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. Is this a big deal? Absolutely! It means the full mattress and pillows (not just one or two components) have been scientifically tested for prolonged exposure in environmental chambers to meet the most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates. Few mattresses and pillows qualify for this gold standard.
An Avocado Green Mattress is made with only finest natural and organic materials. There are no petroleum-based polyurethane foams to break down. No memory foams to off-gas. No chemical adhesives between the comfort layers to emit chemical odors. And no chemical flame retardants with PBDEs to endanger your health or cognition. In contrast, an Avocado mattress is non-toxic, with just natural ingredients included on our legal label (which reads: Natural Latex, Wool Fiber and Organic Cotton).
“THERE ARE MATTRESSES OUT THERE THAT MADE WITH NATURAL INGREDIENTS THAT DON’T RELY ON SO MANY SYNTHETIC MATERIALS AND POTENTIALLY HARMFUL CHEMICALS—LIKE AVOCADO GREEN MATTRESS.”
5. COOLER SLEEP
Staying cool helps you fall asleep faster and encourages deeper sleep. But synthetic materials tend to trap and retain your body heat and greatly inhibit airflow. An Avocado mattress is different. Our materials breathe naturally, wick away moisture, and gently lift you. On an Avocado, you “float” on our sleeping surface, rather than “sinking” into it. The result is a much cooler and more restorative sleep experience.
“Made with 100-percent natural Dunlop latex, natural wool, and organic cotton, this GOTS-certified, flame retardant-free mattress checks all the boxes for a healthier sleep with no off-gassing. The natural and organic materials also wick away moisture and allow for better airflow than polyurethane-based foams, making for a cooler night’s sleep.”
6. CRITICAL BACK SUPPORT
Chiropractors advise patients: “ensure that your mattress is not too soft and has proper back support, or it may exacerbate problems.” (Read more on back pain relief.) That’s why our natural cushioning layers are buttressed by Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone®. This premium, internal unit arranges up to 1,414 fabric-encased innersprings into three strategic zones, plus a reinforced perimeter. These float independently to support your body’s natural curves. It offers lasting pressure-point relief and further extends the life of your mattress.
“WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOU IS ALSO GOOD FOR THE PLANET.”
7. SUPERIOR MOTION CONTROL
For couples, motion isolation is important — to control the impact of your partner’s tossing, turning and getting in and out of bed. However, good motion control often means sacrificing the gentle bounce associated with a luxury mattress. Not so with an Avocado. Our internal support unit effectively isolates and absorbs your partner’s movements, while our generous natural latex provides responsiveness and resilience.
“I have selected Avocado Green Mattress to recommend to my clients. And I sleep on one myself, too.” — Dr. Troy Willis, Founder
Most of the bed-in-a-box mattresses are made from polyurethane foam and are engineered to last just 7-10 years. An Avocado Green Mattress is engineered to last, with premium materials and high-end components. That’s why we proudly offer a 25-year limited warranty with no crazy gimmicks. It’s one of the best warranties in the industry, and demonstrates our commitment to making a quality, durable product that delivers lasting value.
“Honesty defines this company that believes natural materials are key to restful sleep and long-term health. The passionate team behind Avocado believes it’s important to drive change by opting for eco-friendly products that ultimately help protect the environment and promote a greener and more sustainable world.” — Green Building & Design
9. HANDMADE QUALITY
Details matter. Our mattress are handmade in sunny California. The seams along the edges are carefully double stitched. The four side handles firmly reinforced. And the organic cotton sleeping surface is button-tufted by hand, as up to 24 yarn-tied strings with soft rosette caps are pulled through every layer of the mattress to hold everything together without using adhesives, and deliver a luxurous finish.
As a passionately green company, we are committed to the ideals of sustainability. Although no company is perfect, we can proudly claim: our latex is made from tree-tapped and sustainable sources, our wool is a renewable and all natural resource, and our our ticking is made with GOTS-certified organic cotton. Even our innerspring system uses steel made largely from recycled automobiles. We are also members of the U.S. Green Building Council, are a Green America® certified business, and offset our carbon emission via our partnership with CarbonFund.
We believe it is important to consider the cradle-to-grave lifecycle of products. Consider this alarming fact: Americans dispose of nearly 20 million mattresses every year. Because an Avocado mattress is made with natural and organic materials, it is largely biodegradable and some parts are compostable. Yes, even our steel innersprings can be recycled for future use. The end result is: it will have significantly less environmental impact when — many, many years down the road — it’s finally time to put your mattress to rest.
“Most of these materials are renewable and biodegradable. (Even the latex is compostable!) The whole mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment while the company is an active member of 1% for the Planet®, giving back revenues to support environmental nonprofits. All of which is to say, they’re really in to being green.”
12. GIVING BACK
At Avocado, we’re doing our part to help save the planet. As members of 1% for the Planet, we’ve committed to donating 1% of our revenues to vetted nonprofits in an effort to address the interrelated issues of climate change, healthy food systems, land management, water resources, pollution and wildlife diversity. Does this matter to you? It should. We all need to start thinking longer-term and working together.
