ORGANIC PROTECTION FOR THE CRIB
Babies and toddlers have accidents, so a waterproof layer between the crib sheet and the mattress makes sense. Ours is a fitted, lightweight pad: a thin polyurethane membrane sandwiched between two layers of soft GOTS-certified organic cotton, so it doesn’t crinkle or make the rubbery noise of vinyl covers. The membrane makes up about 5% of the protector by weight, so organic cotton does most of the work. For safe use, the protector should fit snugly and lie flat on a standard crib mattress, under a fitted crib sheet, with no loose bedding in the crib.
NO VINYL, NO PVC
Many waterproof crib pads use vinyl (PVC), which is stiff, noisy, and often softened with plasticizers. Ours uses a thin polyurethane film instead. It blocks everyday spills and diaper leaks long enough to clean up, stays soft and flexible under the crib sheet, and lets water vapor pass through instead of sealing it in. The finished protector is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Class I certified, which includes testing for phthalates and other harmful substances. Because it’s a separate, fitted layer, you can take it off after an accident and machine-wash the whole thing, rather than wiping down a waterproof surface built into the mattress.
WHY ORGANIC MATTERS
Our Organic Waterproof Crib Mattress Protector is GOTS-certified, the world’s leading processing standard for organic textiles. GOTS certifies the finished product, not just the fiber: every processing stage, from fiber processing to sewing in a GOTS-certified factory, meets environmental and social criteria. The cotton itself must be certified organic, grown without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetically modified seed. The result is a soft organic cotton surface on both sides of the waterproof layer.
SIMPLE CARE
Wash your protector before first use. Organic cotton shrinks, so we make it slightly oversized, and it can take up to three washes to reach its intended fit. Before putting it on the crib, check that it fits snugly and lies flat without bunching. After that, spot clean or machine wash with an eco-conscious detergent. Don’t use bleach or iron it. Tumble dry on low, or line dry until completely dry.

Construction
Our Organic Waterproof Crib Mattress Protector, including its fitted skirt, is made with GOTS-certified organic cotton (95%) and a thin polyurethane waterproof membrane (5%) between two cotton layers. The membrane is made with Susterra® propanediol, a USDA-certified biobased ingredient sourced from corn. Avocado manufactures it in a GOTS-certified factory in Pakistan, with no fire retardants or antimicrobial treatments. It’s a fitted protective pad, not a zippered full encasement, so it doesn’t seal the sides and bottom of the mattress and isn’t an allergen barrier.
Performance Expectations
Our Organic Waterproof Crib Mattress Protector is designed for everyday spills, leaks, and diaper accidents. Two layers of organic cotton absorb liquid, and a thin polyurethane membrane permitted under GOTS holds it back long enough for prompt cleanup. Like other polyurethane membranes, its performance gradually declines with age, washing, heat, and wear, so we don’t claim it’s foolproof. Strip and wash it promptly after an accident, and replace it if liquid starts reaching the mattress. Many parents keep a second protector on hand so the crib stays covered while one is in the wash. If you need a thick, zippered plastic encasement, we don’t make one: we chose certified organic materials instead.
Tested for PFAS: None Detected
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are synthetic chemicals used industry-wide for waterproofing, stain resistance, and flame retardancy. They persist in the environment and the human body, which is why they're called "forever chemicals." We don't use chemical treatments or chemical flame retardants, and we validate that claim with lab testing.
Our 2026 independent third-party program covers 679 individual PFAS substances — up from 320 in 2024 — across our organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex, crib mattress core, and every component of our Waterproof Mattress Protector (which has the same construction as our Crib Mattress Waterproof Protector). Testing was performed by Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, using targeted LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methods at a detection limit of 10 parts per billion for most substances. The result across every component tested: none detected.
Some industry certifications screen a smaller panel — around 80 compounds — and rely on a 50-ppm total-fluorine threshold, roughly 5,000 times less sensitive than our per-substance limit, and don't publish the underlying results. Care Instructions
Please wash your Organic Waterproof Crib Protector before use with an eco-conscious laundry detergent. Do not bleach. Tumble dry low or hang to dry until completely dry. Getting the protector to the proper size may take up to three washes. The organic cotton layers may shrink during the first few washes, allowing the protector to reach its intended fit.
