Organic Comfort & Protection
Given the choice, we recommend our Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protector: it’s organic certified, absorbent, breathable, and has no waterproof layer at all. But we also know practicality comes first sometimes, whether that means kids, pets, or nighttime spills. That’s why we made this GOTS-certified Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector. Its waterproof layer is a thin, breathable polyurethane membrane made with a corn-derived ingredient, kept to about 5% of the protector by weight so the organic cotton does most of the work.
BREATHABLE
BY DESIGN
Our waterproof barrier is an ultra-thin, flexible film designed for everyday moisture protection, without the bulk, noise, or stiffness of traditional plastic covers. Keeping that layer thin also helps us meet GOTS organic standards: we keep synthetic materials to a minimum, and GOTS-certified organic cotton does most of the work, supporting airflow and comfort with less noise.
WHY ORGANIC MATTERS
Conventional cotton farming typically relies on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Certified organic cotton is grown without them and without genetically modified seed. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton for both absorbent layers around the waterproof barrier and for the fitted elastic skirt, so you get cotton’s natural softness and breathability, made the organic way.
EASY CARE
Wash your protector before first use. Cotton naturally shrinks, so we make it slightly oversized, and it can take up to three washes to reach its intended fit. After that, spot clean or machine wash with an eco-conscious detergent. Don’t use bleach or iron it. Tumble dry on low, or line dry until completely dry.
THIRD-PARTY CERTIFIED
Our Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning it was tested to meet strict limits on chemical emissions, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde. UL has also verified our formaldehyde-free claim. The finished protector is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified (certificate no. 24.HUS.86422), meaning it was lab-tested for harmful substances. And it’s MADE SAFE® certified nontoxic: MADE SAFE screens every material against its list of substances known or suspected to harm people, animals, or ecosystems.
Radically Honest Specs
Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector
The Standard Pocket fits mattresses 6–16" deep, including every Avocado mattress. The Deep Pocket fits mattresses up to 22" deep. Both work with any mattress type or brand and perform well on adjustable bases. The waterproof membrane is designed for everyday moisture protection: it holds back spills, sweat, and occasional accidents long enough to clean up. For frequent or prolonged liquid exposure, a heavier plastic encasement provides more complete waterproofing, with trade-offs in breathability, comfort, and material standards.

Organic Cotton and a Waterproof Layer Made with a Corn-Derived Ingredient
Our Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is made with two layers of organic cotton around an ultra-thin, breathable polyurethane membrane. The membrane is made with Susterra® propanediol, a USDA-certified biobased ingredient sourced from corn starch, in place of the petroleum-based 1,4-butanediol (BDO) used in conventional polyurethane. Our protectors are made in a GOTS-certified factory in Pakistan, with no fire retardants or antimicrobial treatments. It is a GOTS-certified product.
Performance Expectations — Are We Making 100% Waterproof Claims?
Our Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is designed to protect your mattress from everyday spills, sweat, and occasional accidents without relying on thick plastic or synthetic coatings. It pairs a soft organic cotton surface with a thin polyurethane barrier permitted under GOTS, which holds back moisture long enough for prompt cleanup while maintaining breathability and comfort. Because the barrier is a flexible, breathable film rather than a solid plastic layer, its performance can gradually diminish with regular use and laundering, as is common with polyurethane membranes. That’s why we don’t claim our protector is “100% foolproof” or intended for heavy or prolonged liquid exposure. Instead, it’s engineered to balance effective moisture protection, airflow, and the material standards required for a GOTS-certified organic product. Customers rate it 4.8 out of 5 across more than 1,000 reviews. Pro tip: some customers keep a second protector on hand to swap in while laundering the first.
Why We Use a Minimal Waterproof Barrier Made to GOTS Standards
Our waterproofing approach reflects our commitment to organic materials. By minimizing plastic and synthetic waterproofing materials, with the waterproof layer at approximately 5% of the finished product by weight, we stay within GOTS organic standards while delivering effective everyday moisture protection without compromising breathability or comfort.
Certifications
We use organic cotton in a soft, natural color for a luxurious and premium finish. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. GREENGUARD Gold certified for low emissions and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified by UL Environment. That means the mattress protector is scientifically proven to meet some of the world's most rigorous third-party emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and phthalates. MADE SAFE® certification determines all of the materials we use are free from ingredients linked to or suspected to cause harm to humans, animals, or ecosystems.
Tested for PFAS: None Detected
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals used industry-wide for waterproofing, stain resistance, and flame retardancy. They persist in the environment and the human body, which is why they’re called “forever chemicals.” We don’t use chemical treatments or chemical flame retardants, and we validate that claim with lab testing.
Our 2026 independent third-party program covers 679 individual PFAS substances (up from 320 in 2024) across our organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex, crib mattress core, and every component of our Waterproof Mattress Protector. Testing was performed by Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, using targeted LC-MS/MS and GC-MS methods at a detection limit of 10 parts per billion for most substances. The result across every component tested: none detected.
Testing approaches differ. Some certifications screen for PFAS with a total-fluorine measurement, which reports one aggregate value rather than identifying individual substances. Targeted testing, like ours, looks for each named PFAS compound individually at a stated detection limit. These methods answer different questions, which is why we publish full Intertek reports, substance by substance and component by component, so you can see exactly what was tested and what was found. Read our PFAS testing results from 2024 and 2026.
A Barrier for Your Mattress Surface
Our Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector covers the sleep surface of your mattress, helping keep sweat, spills, and debris from getting into it. It’s a fitted protector, not a zippered full encasement, so it doesn’t seal the sides and bottom of the mattress. If you’ve been advised to fully encase your mattress for a dust mite allergy, an encasement is the better choice. The protector is made without fire retardants or antimicrobial treatments, and it’s MADE SAFE® certified and lab-tested for PFAS, with none detected.
Machine Washable for Easy Care
Our Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is designed for easy care and long-lasting protection. Wash your protector with an eco-conscious laundry detergent before first use, ensuring it is free from any manufacturing residues. Avoid using bleach to maintain the integrity of the organic cotton fibers. Tumble dry on low or hang it on a line until thoroughly dry. Do not iron. You may notice that it takes up to three washes for the protector to reach its proper size. We intentionally oversized the protector, knowing that the 100% cotton material would naturally shrink to a perfect fit.
The Climate Label Certified
Avocado is certified by The Climate Label (formerly Climate Neutral Certified), which verifies that companies measure their emissions, set long-term reduction targets, and fund immediate climate action, with standards for performance, transparency, and accountability. We know certification alone isn’t enough. Solving climate change requires systemic solutions, which is why we also advocate for policies that support equitable climate action through our partnerships with Ceres and the American Sustainable Business Network.

Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector FAQ
It's designed for everyday moisture protection: spills, sweat, and occasional accidents. A thin polyurethane membrane between two layers of organic cotton blocks liquid long enough for you to strip the bed and clean up.
We don't claim it's foolproof. It isn't intended for heavy or prolonged liquid exposure, and like every polyurethane membrane, its performance gradually diminishes with use and laundering. If you need complete waterproofing for frequent, heavy exposure, a thicker plastic encasement will do more, with trade-offs in breathability and comfort.
Thick vinyl and plastic covers trap heat because air can't pass through them. Ours uses an ultra-thin, breathable membrane that makes up about 5% of the protector by weight, and the organic cotton surface you sleep on supports airflow. How warm you sleep also depends on your mattress, bedding, and room, so we don't promise a cooling effect.
It's designed not to. The waterproof film is thin and flexible rather than a rigid plastic layer, and it's sandwiched between two soft layers of organic cotton, so you avoid the crinkle and rubbery sound of traditional plastic covers.
Yes. PFAS ("forever chemicals") are widely used for waterproofing, so we test for them. In 2026, Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab, tested every component of this protector for 679 individual PFAS substances at a detection limit of 10 parts per billion for most substances. None were detected.
We publish the full reports, substance by substance and component by component. See our PFAS testing results.
It's a thin polyurethane film made with Susterra® propanediol, a USDA Certified Biobased ingredient sourced from corn. The film is about 5% of the protector by weight; the rest is GOTS-certified organic cotton. No fire retardants or antimicrobial treatments are used.
The finished protector is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions, verified Formaldehyde-Free by UL, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified (certificate no. 24.HUS.86422) after lab testing for harmful substances, and MADE SAFE® certified.
Yes, it can go in the dryer on low. Machine wash with an eco-conscious detergent, or spot clean small spills. Don't use bleach and don't iron it. Tumble dry on low, or line dry until it's completely dry before putting it back on the bed.
Tip: some customers keep a second protector on hand so the bed stays covered while one is in the wash.
Organic cotton shrinks, so we intentionally make the protector oversized. Washing it before first use starts that shrinkage, and it can take up to three washes to reach its intended fit. A first wash also removes any residue from manufacturing.
There's no fixed schedule, because lifespan depends on how often it's washed and how much liquid it handles. Replace it when liquid starts passing through to the mattress, when the membrane shows cracking or peeling, or when the elastic skirt no longer holds a snug fit.
The protector is backed by a one-year limited warranty against defects.
Most likely. The Standard Pocket fits mattresses 6 to 16 inches deep, including every Avocado mattress. The Deep Pocket fits mattresses up to 22 inches deep. Both come in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King, work with any mattress brand or type, and perform well on adjustable bases.
It adds a barrier over the sleep surface of your mattress, which helps keep sweat, spills, and debris from getting into it. It's a fitted protector, not a zippered full encasement, so it doesn't seal the sides and bottom of the mattress. If you've been advised to fully encase your mattress for a dust mite allergy, an encasement is the better choice.
For occasional accidents on a twin or full bed, yes. Strip and wash the protector promptly after an accident, since the membrane is designed to hold liquid long enough for cleanup, not indefinitely. For frequent nightly accidents, keep a second protector on hand to rotate, or consider a heavier plastic encasement. For cribs, use our Organic Crib Waterproof Protector, which is sized for crib mattresses.
The Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protector has no waterproof layer. It's an absorbent, breathable organic cotton pad, and it's our first choice when you want the most natural option. This Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector adds a thin polyurethane membrane for households where spills, sweat, or accidents are a real concern.
