Buying a green mattress requires educated shopping. But separating fact from fiction is a challenge, especially when there are so many confusing brands and industry terms. It’s also important to note that almost no mattress can be 100% organic or natural, despite what they may claim. (For example, we use recycled steel in our support layer coils, which is not organic.)
The real goal is to find the greenest mattress possible at a price point that you can actually afford — and a brand that you can believe in. This is where Avocado is uniquely positioned.

100% NATURAL DUNLOP LATEX
Avocado uses 100% natural Dunlop latex sourced from tree-tapped and sustainable sources in Asia. An eco-INSTITUT® certified material, our Dunlop latex is naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, and more durable than Talalay latex.
Other brands may use Talalay latex, which can start out natural and organic, but requires the addition of six non-natural chemicals: acrylate resins, diphenyl diisocyanate, phenol-melamine resins, phenol-urea, polyvinyl acetate and styrene-butadiene copolymer. That’s why Talalay latex can never be considered natural or organic. (Talalay latex pieces wider than 40″ are also typically seamed with a chemical adhesive.) Or they may use blended and synthetic latex. Or perhaps something mysterious, usually with the words “bio-” or “green-” appended to the name. In those situations, ask to see the legal tag on the mattress, where all truths are revealed. (Our legal tag is detailed on our Avocado Mattress shopping page.)
NATURAL & ORGANIC MATERIALS
Most companies use petroleum-based polyurethane foams. (Memory or viscoelastic foam is the same thing, just with more chemicals added.) But the fact is: prolonged exposure to petroleum-based polyurethane foams may affect the nervous and immune system and cause cancer, neurological disorders, autoimmune weakness, asthma, allergies, infertility, miscarriage and child behavior disorders. Because it off-gasses, some companies add industrial-strength perfumes to mask the chemical odor!

POCKETED SUPPORT COILS
Avocado mattresses feature one of the most advanced multi-zone support coil systems available. There are up to 1,303 coils individually encased — arranged in three distinct zones — that float independently to further improve airflow, support and spinal alignment. Made from heat-treated and stress-relieved 16-gauge wire, these recycled steel coils enable our mattress to deliver firm edge support for the life of the mattress and benefit those in critical need of pressure-point relief and hip, back and shoulder support.
Most brands don’t use pocketed coils. Why don’t they? Because it’s cheaper not to. If you can find one that does, they likely use a much cheaper support system that doesn’t feature a high coil count, combination of zones for critical spinal support, or perimeter reinforcement. What benefit do pocketed coils have for the “average” user? If you’re an athlete that punishes your body or have back or hip pain, it makes a big difference.
HAND-TUFTED & STITCHED
Avocado mattresses feature our distinctive, hand-tufted button rosettes made from pure white Joma New Zealand wool. A time-honored technique dating back to the 17th century, it’s functional and actually extends the life of the mattress for years. Tufting prevents trenches and lumps from appearing over time. And button-tufts act as anchors by pulling yarn through each layer of the mattress.
Other brands don’t do handwork because it’s too labor-intensive, which means the individual quality of the mattress decreases and its shelf life plummets. It also means they can pay workers less money, lining their own pockets with more cash. Why do so few companies craft products that are meant to last?
We use hand-stitched taped edges, double stitched for durability along the perimeter seams, plus heavy-duty upholstered handles.
Most companies use a simple woven knit top, so they don’t have to do any handwork at the seams. Sure, it may look crisp and sharp in a picture with the knit tightly glued to the core, but you have to wonder how well the edges will hold up over time. How long until you feel like you’re rolling off near the edges?
NO CHEMICAL ADHESIVES
Because the layers of an Avocado mattress are held firmly in place with hand-sewn button-tufting and double-stitched seams, we do not use any chemical adhesives.
They use chemical adhesives to bond the internal layers of their mattresses together, as well as to bond the cover to the core. (Imagine a worker with a chemical mask and a spray gun, like at an auto-body shop. Yup, that’s how its done.) Slowly, over time, these toxic chemicals emit volatile organic compounds that impact long-term health. To confuse you, some firms dilute their chemical adhesives with water. Why? So they can say that they use a “water-based” adhesive, which sounds more natural. Scary!
100% NATURAL WOOL
We use 100% pure Joma® New Zealand Wool, because it’s nature’s high-performance material: it wicks away moisture, keeps your mattress smelling fresh, and acts as an all-natural fire barrier. It’s breathable — both warm and cool when you need it. It’s natural crimp gives it bounce, body and soft support characteristics. And it’s also non-allergenic (ideal for those who suffer allergies to feather and down or synthetic bedding products) and a renewable resource. Avocado mattresses feature two 1/2-inch laters of naturally crimped Joma Wool. No added chemicals or synthetics are used.
If they use wool, most use a lesser quality product that does not perform as well over time, or wool with added chemicals and synthetics materials.
NO CHEMICAL FIRE RETARDANTS
We use a special fire barrier protectant of 100% natural hydrated silica — the same compounds as the gemstone opal — to protect both sides of your mattress. It is non-toxic and not fibrogenic. (It’s so safe, Tom’s of Maine® uses it in their toothpaste.) We also use two 1/2-inch layers of pure New Zealand wool (with no added chemicals) for comfort and breathability. Even so, because wool chars but does not burn, it acts a secondary fire barrier. With these two all-natural flame retardants, Avocado mattresses meet and exceed all federal flammability and CPSC standards without using toxic chemical flame retardants.
They use toxic chemical fire retardants. Or they use wool with fire retardant chemicals added, which does not need to be disclosed on the mattress’ legal label. And some even use quasi-natural products like “thistle” — which is just wood pulp chemically bonded with polyester.

FREE SHIPPING, FREE RETURNS
We’ll ship your mattress for free, or hand-delivery it for just $99 more. We give you a risk-free 100-night sleep trial. And if you’re not completely satisfied, we’ll even pick it up or pay to ship it back.
Most companies will ship for free. But they often will charge you to ship the mattress back if you’re not happy. That’s not risk-free. And even fewer companies offer the option of in-home delivery and setup, or have the means to help you remove your old mattress at no additional charge.
