CERTIFIED FOR ECOLOGY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. The GOTS standard defines worldwide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to end consumers.
BECAUSE WE LIVE DOWNSTREAM
Manufacturing results in the often inadequately treated discharge of toxic chemicals into the air and water, as well as hazardous workplace situations. We all “live downstream” and share the same water and air, and workers making products for us deserve our respect. GOTS prohibits the use of the kinds of chemicals commonly used in textile processing that can cause cancer, birth defects and other serious illnesses. Chemicals, like persistent hormone-disrupting substances, also destroy eco-systems and biodiversity on an international scale. GOTS requires that all dyes and auxiliaries are assessed to its strict criteria and approved prior to usage.
SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE
While an important step in the right direction, the use of organic materials alone is not enough. When using organically produced materials, farm workers and the environment are protected. When manufactured without using hazardous chemicals, factory workers and the environment are protected. When there are no harmful residues in the end product, consumers are protected.
A SELECT FEW
Of the hundreds of mattress brands in the United States, only five maintain a GOTS certified production facility — OMI®, Naturepedic®, Savvy Rest®, Lifekind® and, of course, Avocado Green Mattress. Our 175,000 SF facility in Los Angeles is also certified by Control Union® and able to manufacture materials under the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Naturally, we’re proud to be in such good company.
The consensus of the GOTS founding organization was that a clear and unambiguous understanding of the content required that the Global Standard itself focuses on compulsory criteria only. The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from certified organic natural fibers.
NATURAL IS BETTER
Everything that comes through our doors must meet stringent requirements for toxicity and biodegradability. No toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano particles, genetically modified organisms (GMO) or their enzymes may be used. No chlorine bleaching, no Azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds, and no phthalates or PVCs.
As a GOTS certified factory, we have an environmental policy including target goals and procedures to minimize waste and discharge. Raw materials, intermediates, final textile products as well as accessories, meet stringent limits regarding unwanted residues. We are also FSC® certified, as a testimony to our responsible and sustainable forest management practices.
GOTS certification outlines social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labour Organization (ILO) which must be verified. Simply put, it means we provide fair pay and safe working conditions, while saying “no” to discrimination and child labour. Our valued production teams are paid living wages and provided progressive and comprehensive benefits, including family healthcare. Many of our skilled production team members have worked here for more than 30 years!
Our GOTS certification extends to the entire supply chain, and uses a dual system to check compliance with all relevant criteria consisting of on-site auditing and stringent residue testing.
WHOLE SYSTEM APPROACH
Organic is a ‘whole system’ approach to farming and food production. It recognizes the close interrelationships between all parts of the production system from the soil to the consumer. Agricultural principles are: to produce food of high quality in sufficient quantity. To work within natural systems and cycles throughout all levels from the soil to plants and animals.
The Avocado brand is built on two core pillars — Sustainability and Social Responsibility — that actually go well beyond organic practices. When you purchase our products, you’re voting (with your wallet) to support environmentally conscious, ethical and sustainable business practices — to help safeguard your health and protect our planet.
OUR LARGER VISION
GOTS certification is important and significant. But our larger vision is as aspirational as it is urgent and action-oriented: to foster socially conscious lifestyles that share a deep responsibility for our planet.
