ERADICATING POVERTY THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Kula Project was founded on the belief that poverty was not the result of a lack money but a lack of opportunity — and if organizations could invest in the ideas and businesses of people living in poverty, together, they could change the future. During October of 2018, we chose Kula as our featured giving partner, donating 1% of all of our profits to their worthy cause.

BUILDING A KULA WOMEN’S CENTER

If you purchased from us during that time, you, too, helped make a difference in the lives of poverty-stricken women in Rwanda. In fact, our donation helped fully fund an entire Kula Women’s Center.

Because of you, young women will have the opportunity to lead a life based on the decisions they make, not the circumstances in which they were born. They will learn artisan skills and business leadership. For the first time in their lives, they will take female health and family planning classes. They will learn public speaking skills so that they can pitch their business ideas. Farmer Field School students will learn how to grow and cook balanced meals, organic practices, and how to mitigate climate change.

— Sarah Buchanan-Sasson, Executive Director/Co-Founder, Kula Project

WHY RWANDA?

On May 12, 2012, James and Sarah Sasson founded Kula Project. They began with the belief that poverty was not a lack money but a lack of opportunity, and if organizations could invest in the ideas and businesses of people living in poverty, together, they could change the future for generations to come. While they set out to do just that, the first two years brought many failures and hard lessons, and it wasn’t until January of 2014 that they began to find their footing.

Sarah and James spent a month in Rwanda listening and learning, and they knew that Rwanda was the place they were supposed to be. So they completed their current projects in Kenya, Swaziland, and Jamaica, and focused all of their efforts on the beautiful country in the heart of Africa. Since then, Kula has worked solely in Rwanda alongside the most remarkable women and men who are doing everything in their power to create a life of peace and prosperity for their children.
