100% ORGANIC CERTIFIED
The materials we use are just as important as the materials we don’t use. No polyurethane foams, no chemical adhesives to bind the layers or chemical flame retardants. Instead, our green mattress boasts premium, natural materials — 100% organic certified latex, cotton, and wool — delivering more luxury, performance, and durability than any synthetic material. This is why Avocado has the highest rated mattress in America across every category and price range.
When it comes to our materials, we go far above and beyond. We ethically raise our own sheep. We clean and process our wool naturally without toxic chemicals. We own our rubber tree farms and make our own latex foam cores. We craft each mattress by hand, in sunny Los Angeles, in a dedicated factory that we own and has been in continuous operation since 1987. And we obsessively test and certify everything in our brand name for trust and transparency — from our farms all the way to the finished mattress — to be natural, organic, safe, responsible, and sustainable.
This radically honest and vertically-integrated approach ensures we deliver the best natural mattresses and bedding at remarkably affordable pricing.
ORGANIC LATEX IS
SOFT, COOL, & DURABLE
Latex is the most desirable material for comfort and support in a mattress. No other synthetic materials — polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic latex — come close in terms of comfort, breathability, resilience, and durability.
Yet not all latex is the same. There are no purity, ecological, or social responsibility standards for “natural” or synthetic latex. So we don’t use them. We only use pure and natural, 100% GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex. And we make it ourselves. We co-own more than 4,000 hectares of organic “rubber tree” farms in southern India, which are FSC® certified for responsible forest management. And we even make our own low-protein, GOLS® organic certified latex foam cores. These are eco-INSTITUT® certified for purity and lab tested annually for STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification (19.0.79546, Hohenstein HTTI) to ensure no harmful chemicals are present.
ORGANIC WOOL IS
NATURALLY BETTER THAN
Since ancient times, people have used wool in bedding to stay comfortable and cool because of its unique and amazing properties — it keeps you warm when it’s cold and and cool when it’s hot. That’s because the hollow fiber structure of wool fibers allows for large volumes of air, giving natural insulation, elasticity, and resilience. It can also absorb significant amounts of water (up to 30% of its weight) without ever feeling wet, offering natural temperature-regulating properties that complement our organic latex foam. Better still, it’s naturally flame resistant. So we use pure 100% GOTS organic wool in our green mattress to completely eliminate the need for flame retarding chemicals or synthetic fire barriers, while still meeting federal safety standards for flammability. It has also received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI) to ensure no harmful chemicals are present. There is no more sustainable and renewable fiber. Sheep just need sunshine and green grass to thrive.
Where do we source our wool? From our own organic certified, responsibly managed herds — numbering more than 150,000. These sheep graze more than 40,000 hectares of certified organic pastures along the steps of the Himalayas at altitudes of 8,000 to 14,000 feet above sea level. We directly employ more them 100 farmers, 400 herders, and support more than 200 villages with fair, living wages.
ORGANIC COTTON IS
SOFT, LUXURIOUS, STRONG
Conventional cotton is chemically grown and one of the world’s most polluted crops. This impact on human health and the environment is irresponsible and unsustainable. So as a rule, we don’t use conventional cotton. (Nor do we use polyester or synthetic stretch-knit blends in our mattress and pillow covers.) Instead, we only use premium 100% GOTS organic certified cotton from India — an incredibly soft yet highly durable natural fiber. Our Vegan mattress (which is made without wool) uses USDA certified organic cotton fiber, farmed using National Organic Program (NOP) standards. It has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification (19.HIN.68466, Hohenstein HTTI). It provides a luxurious finish, unparalleled comfort, and ample air circulation.
Better still, organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, leaving the soil, air, and water free from contaminates that cause harm. Organic cotton produces around 46% less CO2e compared to conventional cotton. It also uses far less water to grow since our organic cotton growers generally rely on rainwater for irrigation.
