Avocado hand-tufts mattresses in our dedicated GOTS and GOLS certified organic factory in Los Angeles, California, using the finest domestic and imported materials. By owning our American factory — as well as the farms that supply most of the mattress material — Avocado can ensure high-quality craftsmanship, sustainable manufacturing practices, and safe and healthy working conditions. We're fully transparent. To learn more, read our annual Impact Report.
Avocado owns a farm with over 4,000 acres of the rubber tree, or Hevea Brasiliensis, in India. We tap the trees by hand to harvest and collect the sap. At our nearby processing facility, we turn the raw latex into natural (and incredibly comfortable) foam cores. That’s how we ensure our latex meets the lofty criteria outlined by the 100% GOLS organic certified standard.
We manage our own sheep farm, too. About 180,000 of our sheep wander throughout the Himalayan foothills. Our farmers herd them twice a year, when we shear them. After processing the wonder fiber in our own co-owned facility, we use the 100% GOTS organic certified wool in our mattresses for natural, thermoregulating luxury.
And we have the certifications to back it up: Global Organic Textile Standard, Global Organic Latex Standard, GREENGUARD Gold, OEKO-TEX, MADE SAFE, Eco-Institut, FSC, USDA Organic, Formaldehyde Free, and more. That means our mattresses, bedding, and furniture are validated by (many) third-parties to be better for you and the planet.
No, actually. The Avocado Green Mattress consistently rates as the top mattress by independent, third-party reviewers. Good Housekeeping recently named our Green Mattress the “Best Organic Mattress.” “The best part is that you don't have to sacrifice performance for an organic mattress,” they wrote. “Users love sleeping on it and told us it keeps their body weight distributed.”
In 2019, we became the first mattress company to be Climate Neutral Certified. That means our carbon footprint is net-zero. We reduce emissions however we can and offset the rest by supporting validated projects, like forest conservation, that help counter climate change. In 2020, Avocado went carbon negative, offsetting more carbon than it generates — the new bar for all sustainable brands.
Every month, since February 2017 (every quarter, beginning in 2020), we donate money to a nonprofit that inspires us. The donations started as part of our membership to 1% For the Planet, which helps us channel 1% of our revenues to vetted organizations. Three years, 30 nonprofits, and a massive, demonstrable positive impact on our global community later, our Giving Program has become as fundamental to Avocado’s mission as mattresses. In April 2020, 1% for the Planet honored Avocado with their inaugural Pinnacle Award.
