FACTS OVER FICTION
Separating fact from fiction is harder than it should be when shopping for an organic mattress. Buzzwords are everywhere, certifications are misused, and few brands publish the specifics that actually matter. The smart approach: focus on verifiable credentials — finished-product certifications, material sourcing transparency, and direct answers to direct questions. When evaluating natural and organic mattress brands, consider the following:
GREEN
IS IT BLENDED OR SYNTHETIC LATEX?
Blended latex contains both natural and synthetic rubber — the typical ratio is about 80% synthetic, 20% natural. Synthetic and blended latex cost less to produce but are less durable, breathe less effectively, and are more prone to body impressions over time. Some manufacturers can legally describe their foam as "natural latex" even when natural content is as low as 30%. If a brand doesn't specify "100% natural latex," ask directly.
Avocado uses only 100% GOLS organic certified latex — independently certified by eco-INSTITUT® and free of synthetic rubber, blends, and chemical additives. Read how our natural latex is made.
IS POLYURETHANE FOAM OR MEMORY FOAM USED?
Most mattress brands rely on petroleum-based polyurethane foams, including memory foam, which is polyurethane with added chemicals to slow its response. Prolonged exposure to off-gassing from these materials has been associated with respiratory irritation, immune system effects, and other health concerns. Be equally cautious with "bio-based" or "plant-based" foam claims. Most use only a small percentage of natural material (often less than 30%) while the remainder is petroleum-derived polyurethane. Ask for the exact percentage.
Avocado mattresses contain no polyurethane, memory foam, or synthetic foam of any kind. Our comfort layers use GOLS organic certified latex and GOTS organic certified wool — materials that are independently certified, fully traceable, and listed on our legal tag, published directly on our product page.

ORGANIC
DO THEIR EMISSIONS MEET SAFE STANDARDS?
Most traditional polyurethane and memory foam mattresses off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that accumulate in indoor air. When brands claim to be "green" or "non-toxic," look for finished-product certifications — not just material-level claims — that independently verify what's actually inside the mattress you sleep on.
Avocado mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL — tested to meet rigorous chemical emissions standards for VOCs, formaldehyde, and phthalates. We are also the only innerspring mattress brand in America with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I certification on our finished mattresses — the most stringent level, designed for products in direct contact with skin, screening for more than 100 harmful substances in the completed product. Our GOLS-certified latex is additionally eco-INSTITUT® certified by our manufacturer. For a full overview of our certification stack, visit our certifications page.
SUPPORT
ARE THEY ALL FOAM AND NO SUPPORT?
Most direct-to-consumer brands build mattresses without an internal coil system — it costs less to produce, and all-foam mattresses don't last as long, so customers replace them sooner. Brands that do include coils may not offer a meaningful coil count, multi-zone construction for spinal alignment, or perimeter reinforcement. These details matter, particularly for pressure relief, edge support, and long-term durability.
Avocado mattresses feature one of the most advanced multi-zone innerspring support units available — up to 1,414 individually encased coils arranged in five distinct zones that respond independently to improve airflow, support, and spinal alignment. Made from heat-treated, stress-relieved recycled steel, our coil system delivers firm edge support for the life of the mattress, with targeted pressure relief at the hips, back, and shoulders.
ARE THEY GENTLE, YET FIRM?
Support and comfort mean different things to different sleepers. The right feel depends on your sleep position, body type, and whether you need pressure relief or firm spinal support. A mattress that's too soft compromises posture; one that's too firm creates pressure points. Look for a brand that offers a genuine range of feels and explains clearly what distinguishes each one.
The Avocado Green Mattress is available in five feels — Medium, Plush, Ultra Plush, Firm, and Extra Firm — to accommodate a wide range of sleep preferences and body types. Our Medium is ideal for back and stomach sleepers seeking balanced support. Plush and Ultra Plush suit side sleepers and those who prefer more cushioning. Firm and Extra Firm are designed for sleepers who want maximum support with minimal sink. Not sure where to start? Our choosing the right mattress guide can help.
CRAFTED
ARE THEY HANDCRAFTED?
Most brands automate production because handwork is labor-intensive. The result is less individual quality control and mattresses that may not hold up as long. Handcraftsmanship isn't just an aesthetic point — it's a durability and accountability statement.
Avocado mattresses are handcrafted with the finest domestic and international materials in Los Angeles, California. We own our factory, which has operated at the top end of the market since 1987. Our mattresses feature hand-tufted button rosettes made from pure GOTS organic certified wool — a technique dating to the 17th century that prevents material migration and extends the life of the mattress by anchoring each layer in place. Our mattresses also feature hand-sewn edges and reinforced handles.
DO THE DETAILS SHOW?
Many brands use a simple knit cover glued to the core — it photographs well, but the edges often don't hold up over time. Look for hand-stitched perimeter seams and construction details designed to last, not just to look good in a product photo.
We use hand-stitched taped edges, double-stitched for durability along the perimeter seams, plus heavy-duty upholstered handles.
ARE THEY FLEXIBLE?
Not every mattress works with every bed setup. Some require a completely flat, solid platform. If you use an adjustable base or a slatted frame, confirm compatibility before you buy.
Avocado mattresses are flexible. They are compatible with slatted frames, platform bases, and adjustable beds.
SAFE
ARE THEY MINIMALLY PROCESSED?
Chemical adhesives are commonly used to bond a mattress's internal layers together and to attach the cover to the core. Over time, these adhesives can off-gas VOCs that accumulate in your indoor air — especially in an enclosed sleeping environment. Fewer chemical inputs in construction means lower exposure risk.
Because Avocado mattresses are held firmly in place with hand-sewn button-tufting, we don't use chemical adhesives between comfort layers or between the cover and the core. This radically minimal approach reduces chemical exposure and supports healthier indoor air quality — without sacrificing durability.
PURE
DO THEY SLEEP COOL?
Memory foam and polyurethane foam tend to sleep hot because their dense structures trap body heat and restrict airflow. If temperature is a priority, look for mattresses built with naturally breathable materials and an open coil architecture.
The key to cool sleep is breathability at every layer. Our mattresses use GOLS organic certified latex, which breathes naturally; GOTS organic certified wool, which actively wicks moisture; GOTS organic certified cotton in the ticking; and a pocketed innerspring support unit that promotes continuous airflow throughout the mattress.
DO THEY USE CHEMICAL FIRE RETARDANTS?
Some brands use toxic chemical flame retardants — and in some cases, these chemicals are added to the wool itself without requiring disclosure on the legal tag. Others rely on quasi-natural "barriers" made from wood pulp chemically bonded with polyester. Ask specifically what the fire barrier is, how it's made, and whether it carries any independent certification.
Avocado Green Mattresses use 100% GOTS organic certified wool as a natural fire barrier — one ounce per square foot, with no added chemicals. Wool chars rather than burns, allowing our mattresses to meet and exceed all federal flammability and CPSC standards without toxic flame retardants. Our Vegan Hybrid Mattress uses a 100% natural graphite-infused organic latex layer as a non-toxic alternative fire barrier.

TRUSTED
HOW STRONG IS THEIR WARRANTY?
Most mattress warranties are heavily prorated — coverage decreases significantly over time and customers often bear the cost of shipping. A 20-year warranty with full proration after year one is worth far less than it sounds. Read the fine print before assigning value to any warranty term.
We stand behind our materials and craftsmanship with one of the strongest warranties in the industry: 25 years. The first 10 years are fully non-prorated — no cost to you for repair or replacement, with shipping and pickup included. Years 11 through 25 provide additional prorated coverage. See full warranty details.
REVIEWS: ARE THEY POSITIVE AND TRUSTWORTHY?
It's not difficult for brands to curate or manufacture favorable reviews. Look for reviews from verified purchasers, collected and published by a reliable third-party platform — and cross-reference with independent sources for a fuller picture.
Avocado's product reviews are automatically sent to verified purchasers by YotPo and published unfiltered and unedited on our product pages and reviews section. Our certifications — including GOTS (CU863637), GOLS, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE, and EWG Verified — are independently issued, publicly searchable, and renewed on an ongoing basis. That's a standard of accountability few brands can match.
