GOLS CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX

We believe natural rubber latex makes the most comfortable and supportive mattresses on the planet. Our GOLS-certified organic latex is breathable, resilient, and durable and delivers excellent motion isolation and back-loving support. We believe the best mattresses in the world are made using natural latex rubber. No other material comes close in terms of comfort, breathability, resiliency, elasticity, motion isolation, durability, and support. We source our GOLS-certified organic latex ethically and responsibly from farms in Guatemala and India, where it's also processed in facilities that meet organic-certified standards.

OUR IMPACT REPORT

GOLS Organic Latex Mattress Certified Avocado Green

NATURAL LATEX IS A RENEWABLE RESOURCE

Natural rubber comes from nature and is a renewable resource. It is tapped from trees that are not damaged in the extraction process. We do not use synthetic latex.

ORGANIC STANDARDS

Our GOLS-certified organic latex (CU863367) rubber (CU 863637) is sourced from FSC®-certified farms and facilities (NC-COC-036915) in Guatemala and India and meets high standards for environmental and social responsibility.

HOW WE HARVEST OUR ORGANIC LATEX

IT BEGINS WITH RUBBER TREE TAPPING

Tapping a rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis) requires a skilled hand. Early in the morning, our tappers use a metal gouge with a sharp tip to make a shallow cut in the outer bark at a downward angle, winding ribbon around the tree. This opens the network of continuous latex vessels that spiral around the tree without harming it.

MILKY WHITE LATEX, DRIP BY DRIP

At the end of the winding channel, the tapper makes a downward cut and hangs a small metal cup neatly from the side of the tree. As the milky white latex flows and drips, it’s collected in the cup. Stabilizers are added to prevent clumping. Each rubber tree provides about 15 grams of latex per day.

FARMERS COLLECT
THE LATEX SAP

After four to six hours, the collection cup is filled. The rubber tree can be harvested in this way about two to three times a week, except during the dry season, for approximately 25 years.

MAKING ORGANIC LATEX CORES

PROCESSED TO
ORGANIC STANDARDS

We add essential processing agents to the raw natural latex, consistent with the standards of the USDA's National Organic Program. All latex foam requires these essential stabilizing and processing agents to transform raw latex sap into commercially viable and durable latex foam cores.

POURED INTO MOLDS

The mixed latex foam is pumped into large molds, like oversized waffle irons. Since latex foam is a poor conductor of heat (which is great for a mattress), pins are needed in the mold to help heat the foam consistently when baked. Pins holes are characteristic of natural latex foam cores.

BAKED & RINSED

The mold is closed, passed into large ovens, and heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for one hour. (In India, the ovens use steam from rainwater heated by burning wood harvested from expired latex trees.) The resulting latex foam is then submerged in tanks with fresh water before being squeezed to just 6 millimeters between steel rollers. This step reduces any residual chemicals and impurities from the latex.

HIGHEST STANDARDS

The resulting GOLS-certified organic latex is made with ≥95% certified organic latex, the highest possible standard. A video produced by Insider Business, as part of their "So Expensive" documentary series, provides an overview of this amazing process.

NON-TOXIC STANDARDS

Our GOLS-certified organic latex meets the lab-based testing standards of the eco-INSTITUT label (119-34212-001) and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX (19.HIN.79546 HOHENSTEIN HTTI). The organic latex, as part of the finished mattress, also meets the rigorous screening standards of the MADE SAFE label and emission standards of GREENGUARD Gold and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification. Few brands hold all of these certifications.
