OUR LOS ANGELES FAMILY

MANUFACTURING TO THE WORLD'S HIGHEST ORGANIC STANDARDS

Our Los Angeles facility has been handcrafting mattresses since 1987. The craft that built that reputation — hand needle-tufting, in-house coil manufacturing, traditional bedmaking techniques — now operates under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), one of the world's most rigorous independent certifications, governing every step of textile processing from material inputs through manufacturing.

GOTS does not certify components or individual materials. It certifies the finished product and the facility that makes it, which means the entire system has been independently audited, not just the parts a brand chooses to highlight. Our Los Angeles factory (CU863637) is certified by Control Union. Only a handful of mattress brands in the U.S. operate their own GOTS-certified production facilities. We are proud to be among them — and we hold ourselves to that standard across both of our directly operated facilities: our Fullerton manufacturing facility, where every mattress is hand needle-tufted, and our Tecate, Baja California facility, where foundations, accessories, and the City Bed line are produced under the same Avocado-operated standards.

That is not a claim we make lightly. GOTS certification is independently audited every year. The license number is public. The database is searchable. If the standard lapses, it shows.

GLOBAL ORGANIC LATEX STANDARD (GOLS)

WHAT GOLS CERTIFICATION MEANS

Our facility is certified by Control Union to manufacture materials in accordance with the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) — requiring 95% or more certified organic raw material by total weight, with verified traceability from plantation through processing. GOLS certifies the latex material. GOTS certifies the finished mattress. Both are required. Neither substitutes for the other. Learn more about our GOLS-certified organic latex.

HIGHER STANDARDS

ORGANIC IS FOR PEOPLE AND THE PLANET

True organic certification is not just about the product. It is about what the product's existence requires of the world around it. GOTS and GOLS certification governs the entire system — the inputs permitted in cultivation, the chemicals allowed in processing, and the labor conditions required in manufacturing. The same standards that keep synthetic pesticides out of your bedroom keep them out of the fields and waterways where our materials begin. The standard that verifies what is in the mattress also verifies how the people who built it were treated. That is what a finished-product certification means in practice, and it is what this factory has been built to uphold.

ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

THE HIGHEST ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS

We are committed to ensuring that every input that comes through our doors meets stringent requirements. We do not use toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nanoparticles, or genetically modified organisms. We do not use chlorine bleaching, Azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds, or phthalates or PVCs. These are not aspirational policies. They are certification requirements, enforced through independent on-site audits and residue testing — the dual compliance system built into both GOTS and GOLS. Read more about Project Zero Waste.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES

PROJECT ZERO WASTE

In 2025, we achieved an overall waste diversion rate of 88%, validated by UL Solutions under UL 2799 — the only mattress and bedding company to hold this certification. Our target is 90% diversion — UL Silver — by the end of 2026. Every small decision in materials, manufacturing, and shipping contributes to that number. We track it, report it publicly, and hold ourselves to it. Read more about Project Zero Waste.

SOCIAL CRITERIA

SOCIAL CRITERIA

GOTS certification outlines social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labor Organization — fair pay, safe working conditions, freedom of association, and zero tolerance for child labor. These are not self-reported commitments. They are independently audited annually as a condition of maintaining certification. Our production teams are paid living wages with comprehensive benefits, including family healthcare and three weeks of paid vacation.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Our GOTS certification extends to our supply chain through a dual compliance system: on-site auditing and residue testing. Every year, an independent certifying body audits our facility, our records, and our supply chain. Certification is not a one-time achievement — it lapses if the standard isn't met. Ours has been continuously maintained and renewed. That is what accountability looks like in practice.

OUR LARGER Environmental VISION

GOTS SUPPLY CHAIN

Our GOTS certification extends to our supply chain through a dual compliance system: on-site auditing and residue testing. Every year, an independent certifying body audits our facility, our records, and our supply chain. Certification is not a one-time achievement — it lapses if the standard isn't met. Ours has been continuously maintained and renewed. That is what accountability looks like in practice.

OUR LARGER VISION

Our Los Angeles facility is where the organic standard becomes real — in the hands of the people who build every mattress. But the factory is one part of a larger commitment.

We are one of the few mattress brands in America to hold GOTS finished-product certification across every mattress in our lineup — not a certified option alongside a conventional line, but every model, every configuration, every size. We are the only innerspring mattress brand to hold OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I certification across all adult and crib mattresses. We have reduced absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 48% since 2021 while continuing to grow, verified independently under Climate Label Certification for five consecutive years. And we publish what we have not yet solved alongside what we have — because a sustainability report that only accounts for progress is not an honest accounting.

That is not a collection of credentials. It is a system — built over decades, verified annually, and accountable to anyone who wants to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

A GOTS-certified factory has been independently audited to confirm that its materials, processing steps, manufacturing practices, and labor conditions meet the Global Organic Textile Standard. Certification applies to the facility itself — not just the products it makes. That means the auditor has verified what inputs are permitted on site, how they are processed, how workers are treated, and how waste is managed. The factory's certification license is publicly listed in the GOTS database, where anyone can verify it. Avocado's Los Angeles facility holds license CU863637, certified by Control Union.
Every Avocado mattress is handmade in our Fullerton, California facility — where each one is hand needle-tufted by skilled bedmakers using certified organic materials. Our foundations, accessories, and City Bed line are manufactured at our directly operated Tecate, Baja California facility, where every team member is an Avocado employee working under Avocado policies and GOTS-certified standards. Both facilities are directly operated by Avocado — not contracted to third-party manufacturers.
The Los Angeles manufacturing facility that makes every Avocado mattress has been handcrafting mattresses since 1987 — originally as Brentwood Home, which merged with Avocado in 2018 to form Avocado Green Brands. The Avocado brand launched in 2016. The 1987 date refers to the factory and its craft heritage, not to the organic certification — GOTS certification came with the merger and the adoption of Avocado's organic standards. That distinction matters: the manufacturing expertise is decades old. The organic standard is rigorously current.
A GOTS certified factory has been audited to confirm its facility and processes meet organic and social standards. A GOTS finished-product certification means the specific mattress — as it arrives in your home — has been certified as a complete product, with every material, process, and supply chain link verified. Some brands operate in certified facilities but do not hold finished-product licenses for their mattresses. Avocado holds both: a certified facility and finished-product certification (CU863637) for every mattress in our lineup.
Yes. Both of our manufacturing facilities — Fullerton, California and Tecate, Baja California — are directly operated by Avocado Green Brands. Every team member is an Avocado employee. Avocado controls hiring, training, production standards, workplace conditions, and GOTS certification compliance at both facilities. In an industry where cross-border manufacturing is often structured to distance a brand from the labor conditions behind its products, we chose direct employment and direct accountability. That is not a marketing claim — it is a condition of our GOTS certification, which requires independent auditing of social criteria at every certified facility.
Control Union is one of the world's leading independent certification bodies — a GOTS-approved third-party auditor that operates in more than 70 countries. It conducts the annual on-site audits, supply chain reviews, and residue testing that maintain Avocado's GOTS and GOLS certifications. Control Union does not work for Avocado — it is an independent body that verifies our claims against the standard. If we fail the audit, we lose certification. That independence is what makes the certification meaningful.
GOTS certification requires a manufacturing facility to meet standards across four areas: ecological criteria (prohibited substances, wastewater treatment, waste management), social criteria (wages, working hours, freedom of association, worker safety), quality management (traceability, labeling, record-keeping), and supply chain compliance (transaction certificates from certified suppliers). Every area is audited annually by an independent certifying body. The certification is not self-reported and cannot be maintained by policy statements alone — it requires demonstrated, documented compliance across all four areas.
GOTS social criteria are based on the key norms of the International Labor Organization — fair wages, safe working conditions, freedom of association, and zero tolerance for child labor or forced labor. These are verified through independent on-site audits, not self-reported by the brand. At both our Fullerton and Tecate facilities, team members are paid living wages and receive comprehensive benefits including family healthcare, three weeks of paid vacation, and annual immunizations. Our Tecate facility also provides deeply subsidized daily meals and an on-site nurse. These go beyond what certification requires — but certification is what makes them verifiable.
Project Zero Waste is Avocado's ongoing commitment to diverting manufacturing waste from landfills. In 2025, our Fullerton facility achieved an 88% landfill diversion rate, validated by UL Solutions under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation program — making us the only mattress and bedding company to hold this certification. Our target is 90% diversion — UL Silver certification — by the end of 2026. Diversion pathways include recycling, organics recovery, reuse, and donations. We track every material stream independently and report the results publicly each year.
Yes. Every Avocado mattress is handmade in Fullerton, California. Most of our furniture is also built in our Los Angeles woodshop. Our Tecate, Baja California facility — 150 miles south of Fullerton — is directly operated by Avocado and produces foundations, accessories, and the City Bed line. We located production in Tecate in part because the region's deep tradition of textile craftsmanship provides access to specialized sewing skills that meet the precision our GOTS-certified products require. Both facilities operate under the same Avocado standards and GOTS certification. Our mattresses are made with a combination of domestic and imported materials — including GOTS-certified organic cotton from certified farms across the U.S., Turkey, India, and Canada, and GOLS-certified organic latex from Guatemala, India, and Asia. All materials are independently certified regardless of origin.
Our Tecate, Baja California facility produces foundations, sewing accessories, and the City Bed line. It is directly operated by Avocado — all 305 team members are Avocado employees, working under Avocado policies and GOTS-certified standards. The facility operates under a shelter manufacturing arrangement common among foreign companies manufacturing in Mexico, in which a third-party provider handles administrative and regulatory infrastructure. Avocado maintains full operational control including hiring, training, production, and GOTS certification compliance.
