Our Natural Wood Bed Frame is made in our own Los Angeles woodshop, which marries traditional craftsmanship with high-tech capabilities. It's part of our natural furniture collection, which proudly features reclaimed wood, eco-conscious materials, and environmentally conscious manufacturing. Our Natural Wood Bed Frame features clean, modern lines that complement its vintage aesthetic. Consistent with our company values, we handcraft our furniture to meet the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility.
We rescue Douglas fir from local sources in California, with all of its rich character, blemishes, and nail holes carefully smoothed and plainly on display. We do not use MDF or particleboard — just real, solid, FSC®-certified (C156318) wood. The result is an heirloom-quality piece of furniture that is enhanced, never diminished, with life's little dings and scratches.
Furniture paints and finishes are among the leading causes of indoor air pollution because they emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds). In fact, the Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and particle board commonly used in furniture construction often contain known carcinogens, such as Urea-formaldehyde or Phenol-formaldehyde. Our Natural Wood Bed Frame uses none of these materials.
As members of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, you can rest assured that our Natural Wood Bed Frame is a step toward healthier, environmental-friendly living.
The reclaimed wood utilized in our Natural Bed is solid, beautiful, and unique — and harvested from local sources in California. No trees are harmed in the manufacturing of our furniture, which in turn, helps to protect our natural resources, reduce waste (through reuse and by building quality products that last), lessen our footprint, and promote sustainability.
We use reclaimed wood from buildings constructed 50 to 100 years ago. These dense-grain, old-growth woods are harder and more durable than softer new woods. When sealed with a zero-VOC wood stain, the resulting color range of each piece is unique, as shown here. Note: we do our best to match the colors when furniture pieces are ordered together, but can not guarantee any consistency when reclaimed furniture pieces are ordered separately. Variances are to be expected, but that is part of the charm.
Because no trees are cut down or transported to a mill, wood waste from building is diverted from landfills. This also reduces emissions associated with the logging, transport, and processing of new wood, while helping to safeguard our natural resources. All of the wood we use is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (C156138). The use of reclaimed wood can also earn points toward the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program — a nationally recognized rating system for sustainable building by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Solid Wood Construction
Reclaimed (upcycled) solid vintage wood — much of it from old-growth Douglas fir forests in Western North America — is sourced locally from the greater Los Angeles area, where it has been seasoned for decades. Woods slats (1.5 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide, also made from solid Pinewood) are sanded but left unfinished, and placed 3 inches apart along the rails. Wood that has been previously chemically-treated wood is never used. The wood we use will exhibit the character of vintage material, including smoothed nail holes, natural patina, fine cracks, and other weathering. With unparalleled stability, the bed can easily support a foundation and mattress, or just an Avocado Green Mattress on its own (as is our preference, as shown on this page). No tools are required for assembly.
We do not use traditional lacquers or varnishes, which typically contain harsh chemicals and have strong chemicals that can cause headaches, nausea, and respiratory issues. Instead, our beds use a zero-VOC ECOS® wood stain, which is organic, non-toxic, and odor-free. It conforms to CDPH 01350 (VOC emissions test taken at 11, 12, & 14 days for classroom and office use), as well ASTMD-4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation, and respiratory effects.
Safe, Odorless Glues
Our assembly utilizes Titebond® wood glues, which are safe and produce no harmful fumes. They meet the requirements of ASTM D4236 for safe use with arts and crafts and have both been approved for indirect food contact.
Carbon Negative Production & Shipping
Avocado is a carbon negative business. That means we voluntarily offset more than 100% of our emissions, from resource extraction to shipping, by supporting carbon offset projects through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Our offset projects help mitigate climate change and support innovation in addressing greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
Learn More About Our Carbon Negative Initiatives
We operate an FSC®-certified woodshop — in a facility completely separate from our mattress factory, in Los Angeles — which produces wood dust. Read California's required Proposition 65 warning for wood dust.
Return Policy & Warranty
Furniture cannot be returned, except when there are defects in workmanship, which are covered by a 10-year warranty. Keep in mind that reclaimed wood products will feature blemishes, holes, or other scars in the wood as a testimony to its age, character, and singular beauty. Please note that reclaimed wood has inherent color variations. If you purchased a reclaimed wood product in the past, it is unlikely to be an exact match for a newer item. That said, all reclaimed wood furniture in the same order will match.
