NEW FILTER-READY DESIGN
We refocused a large part of our Cut & Sew Department to the production of face masks. They're now available with behind-the-head tie straps and elastic over-the-ear loops, as well as print or plain canvas designs. Avocado organic face coverings are GOTS certified finished products — one of the few certified face coverings available within the United States. They are not medical-grade N95 face masks or considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). However, they can accommodate your own particulate filter, which can be easily inserted within the pocket.
The CDC recommends all Americans wear a cloth mask or covering when out in public because of mounting evidence that infected people without symptoms can spread the virus. Studies show face masks can help reduce the spread of Covid-19 by up to 85 percent and thus save lives. Our organic, washable, and reusable face masks are intended to make wearing a mask accessible, convenient, and environmentally responsible.
FOR THE COMMON GOOD
Avocado was one of the first brands to start making face masks. Our masks are still some of the only 100% GOTS organic certified face coverings available anywhere in the U.S. Our production team has reorganized to meet the critical demand. Although our masks are no longer a nonprofit initiative (as of 4/29), we still offer low-cost pricing (that includes the most appropriate shipping) to make our organic face masks affordable and accessible.
ORGANIC & NON-TOXIC
We stitch our washable face coverings with 100% GOTS organic certified cotton. We use two 7-ounce layers for structure and proper airflow. The cotton canvas has a durable herringbone pattern and features a STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI). We stitch print versions from two layers of lightweight, 100% GOTS organic cotton, with the exception of "Garden Party," which is 70% cotton, 30% linen.
WASHABLE & REUSABLE
FOR ADULTS & KIDS
Our Avocado face covering is machine-washable. That's because we stitch them out of 100% organic cotton. Wash routinely, depending on use. According to the CDC, a standard machine wash will disinfect and clean your mask. Wash with cold water. Tumble dry on low or air dry. Expect some shrinking due to the natural fibers. Our packs of four reusable face masks are intended to make daily use easier to manage by providing enough masks for some to be in the wash while others are in use.
FILTER-READY,
YET BREATHABLE
Our new and improved face mask design incorporates an internal pocket neatly sewn along one long side of the mask, where a third-party particulate filter (not included) can be inserted, such as a coffee filter. These are optional, and not essential. This filter-ready design does not sacrifice a snug fit and breathability, due to the flexible design and organic materials.
THE NEED FOR FACE MASKS
As the novel coronavirus continues to spread, the evidence for the efficacy of face masks and social-distancing is overwhelming. Stay-at-home orders and social-distancing have helped prevent millions of infections and deaths around the world. Another recent study found that if 80 percent of the population wore face masks, cases of Covid-19 would drop by one-twelfth. Avocado’s face masks are not intended to replace the medical grade N95 masks, but since the disease spreads by respiratory droplets, they are still a barrier that can prevent the spread of Covid-19 and save lives.

Avocado is proud to be one of the first brands to start making reusable organic face coverings. Each mask is handmade, right in our GOTS organic certified factory in Los Angeles. Since we started, we've produced and distributed more than 1,000,000 individual masks, including our bulk orders for hospitals, nonprofits, and corporations. We also donated 15,000 masks to the State of California to help facilitate a fair and safe election.
