SLEEP HEALTHY & HAPPY
You will spend nearly one-third of your life in bed, so it’s important to have a healthy mattress — as natural, chemical-free and non-toxic as possible. For people that care about using eco-friendly products, this is a socially conscious choice. For those suffering from health and chemical sensitivities, it’s even more important. So, when searching for a non-toxic mattress from a company that is honest and transparent, consider the following:
NO POLY FOAMS
Is your mattress making you sick? It’s possible. Most of the big foam mattress brands are made from petroleum-based polyurethane. Paired with chemical adhesives and flame retardants, they can emit chemical odors (“off-gassing”) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) over time — which can contribute to unhealthy indoor air quality and impact physical and mental health. They’re also horrible for the environment. At Avocado, we do not use any polyurethane foam. Instead, we proudly use 100% natural Dunlop latex from tree-tapped and sustainably harvested rubber trees, and certified by our provider with an eco-INSTITUT certification. NO MEMORY FOAMS
Memory foams are polyurethane foams with chemicals added to make them “slow to respond,” and generally have strong chemical odors and long-term health risks due to off-gassing. Some memory foams include known carcinogens, like benzene and naphthalene, while others mix latex, soy, green tea, deodorizers and fragrances with their memory foams to make them appear and smell more natural. (Ask to see their law tag, which discloses their mattress ingredients. Ours is clearly detailed on our product page.) We do not use any memory foams. (Sources: Mother Jones, Live Strong)
NO CHEMICAL FLAME RETARDANTS
We do not use chemical flame retardants. Instead, we rely on natural hydrated silica and untreated New Zealand wool as flame retardants, which ensures we meet all safety standards for flammability without the use of chemicals. Chemical flame retardants are known to be “toxic, persist in our environment, and accumulate in our bodies.” Their use is linked to infertility, birth defects, lower IQ scores, behavioral problems in children, as well as liver, kidney, testicular, and breast cancers. Unfortunately, their usage is not required to be disclosed on the mattress legal label. (Sources: The Washington Post; Environmental Protection Agency; Chicago Tribune)
RELYING ON HANDWORK,
NOT CHEMICAL GLUES
Our mattresses are button-tufted by hand in order to anchor the layers of our mattresses together without the use of solvent-based chemical adhesives. We use only a tiny amount of a water-based, LGA-certified bonding agent — completely free from CMR substances. This “radically minimal” approach significantly reduces your chemical exposure and promotes a healthier indoor air quality.
NO SYNTHETIC OR BLENDED LATEX
We do not use synthetic or blended latex — which can contain a blend of natural latex and chemical fillers and/or polyurethane foams to add durability and firmness. These tend to have an odor, break down faster, tear easier, and not last as long as natural latex. They also can share some of the same health risks as polyurethane foam. In contrast, we use 100% natural latex, made from the sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis (rubber) tree, and certified from our manufacturer by the eco-INSTITUT®. It’s both recyclable and biodegradable, and is also mold, mildew and dust mite resistant.
NO COTTON GROWN WITH PESTICIDES
Cotton is one of the world’s dirtiest crops. In fact, seven of the 15 pesticides commonly used on cotton in the United States are listed as “possible,” “likely,” “probable” or “known” human carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency. It is also extremely harmful for the environment. That’s why our ticking is made with certified organic cotton. (Sources: Rodale Institue; National Wildlife)
Every Avocado mattress and pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. It means they’re scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most rigorous, third-party emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates. Few mattresses and pillows qualify for this gold standard.
