SLATS, NOT A PANEL
Without adequate support, a mattress sags into the gaps beneath it and develops impressions that don't recover. Our 1.5-inch Bunkie Board gives it a firm, flat surface to rest on instead: solid wood slats 2.5 inches wide with 2-inch gaps, under a breathable 100% organic cotton canvas cover. Two inches is the number that matters. Your mattress warranty allows slats up to 5 inches apart — this closes them to 2, which distributes weight more evenly and helps the mattress hold its shape over years rather than seasons. It's the low-profile answer where people usually reach for a box spring, delivering the same flat support without the added height and without the flex that makes a box spring the wrong base for an Avocado. And unlike bunkie boards built as a single sealed panel, a slatted design lets air keep moving beneath the mattress, which helps manage moisture and extends its life. A must for trundle beds, bunk beds, daybeds, wire frames, and any frame whose slats sit too far apart to support a mattress properly.
SOLID WOOD SLATS
Plywood, particle board, composite. That's what you'll find inside most bunkie boards — usually as a single sealed panel that traps heat against your mattress and can warp as moisture and temperature shift. We build ours from high-grade Spruce-Pine-Fir, sourced in North America, cut into slats 2.5 inches wide and set 2 inches apart. Solid wood doesn't delaminate the way composite does. And the slats let air move between the mattress and its base, which helps manage moisture and adds years to the mattress above it.
ORGANIC COTTON COVER
Most bunkie boards are wrapped in synthetic fabric that doesn't breathe, and it's usually bonded to the wood with adhesive. We use 100% organic cotton canvas instead, and we attach it with steel staples—no glue, no bonding agents anywhere in the board. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, on land managed to protect soil health rather than deplete it. Canvas is a tight, hard-wearing weave that takes being stretched over a wood frame and stays breathable doing it.

Slatted Design for Maximum Support & Airflow
Most bunkie boards are flat pieces of particleboard or plywood intended to go between your mattress and the surface it sits on. Intentionally, our Bunkie Board is built differently. It is made of solid wood slats and wrapped in GOTS-certified cotton to provide the needed structural support while also allowing airflow. Proper circulation helps your mattress breathe naturally and sleep cool. Our Bunkie Board can be used on any type of sleep setup — on top of a box spring, foundation, platform bed, or bunk bed — anywhere where additional support for a mattress is insufficient. It can be used on top of existing slats if additional support is needed, or replace the slats system entirely. It can also be used with our Coconut Coir Mattress Pad, to reduce squeaking on an existing bed frame or to maximize airflow.

California Residents
We operate our own woodshop — in a facility completely separate from our mattress factory, in Los Angeles — which produces wood dust. Read California's required Proposition 65 warning for wood dust.
Project Zero Waste
We're proud to be certified by UL Solutions for a landfill diversion rate of 85%. That means only 15% of our manufacturing waste ends up in the landfill — we upcycle or recycle the rest. Since we began Project Zero Waste in 2020, we've been a pioneer in the space, increasing our waste diversion rate by 33%. We are the first mattress and bedding company to achieve this. But we aren't done yet. Our goal is at least a 90% diversion rate. Read more about Project Zero Waste.
