DO I NEED A MATTRESS BASE?
Some bed frames, like our Metal Bed Frame, require a base or a foundation to support the mattress. Bed frames that have sturdy slats, usually 3 inches apart from one another across the width of the structure, do not need a mattress base or foundation.
WHAT IS A MATTRESS BASE?
Avocado’s Green Mattress Foundation has a wood frame surrounded by a woven exterior that's designed to provide lasting support for your mattress. It works in place of a boxspring, on top of any traditional metal or wood bed frame or platform that requires a foundation for the optimal sleep experience.
WHAT IS A MATTRESS FOUNDATION?
A mattress foundation, or a base, is a support layer for your mattress required by some bed frames. Avocado’s Green Mattress Foundation has a wood frame surrounded by a woven exterior that's designed to provide lasting support for your mattress.
CAN AN ADJUSTABLE BASE BE USED WITH ANY MATTRESS?
Adjustable Bed Frames require flexible mattresses. They need to be able to bend as the adjustable bed frame contorts into the various personalized positions. Avocado's Luxury Adjustable Bed Frame works seamlessly with our Green Mattress and Vegan Mattress.
CAN YOU USE AN ADJUSTABLE BASE WITH A HEADBOARD?
Headboards fit our luxury Adjustable Bed Frame seamlessly with brackets and a few screws (sold separately). Avocado has its own handsome, natural headboard that is the perfect complement to our Adjustable Bed Frame. It’s made from FSC-certified, 100% reclaimed wood. Our headboard is handmade in Los Angeles by our team of craftspeople who finish it in “rustic raw” with a zero-VOC sealant.
ARE ADJUSTABLE BASES WORTH IT?
An adjustable base can dramatically improve the sleep experience. An adjustable bed quietly glides into the most comfortable position for your body, with automatic presets that relieve tension. Whether you’re sleeping, reading, working, watching TV, enjoying the built-in massage system, or going into the “zero-g” position, the Avocado Adjustable Bed Frame's array of clickable preset positions support your wellness at the touch of a button.
CAN AN ADJUSTABLE BASE REDUCE SNORING?
About 45% of the population snores — a brutal, nightly reality for many. An automatic setting on your remote control gently eases you (or your partner) into a more upright position, which reduces snoring by opening up the airways.
WHICH ADJUSTABLE BASE IS BEST?
Avocado’s luxury Adjustable Bed Frame is a first: a two-piece design that places the adjustable bed inside an elegantly upholstered frame with GOTS organic certified cotton and wool atop FSC-certified wooden legs. The adjustable bed quietly glides into the most comfortable position for your body. A remote control and silent motor simply automate comfortable presets, customizeable adjustments, a dual tension-relieving massage system, edge-to-edge lumbar support, and underbed lights.

CAN I PUT MY MATTRESS ON THE FLOOR?
We do not recommend putting your mattress on the floor. Doing so can lead to mold beneath the mattress. It also makes the mattress less breathable, since it's resting on an impermeable surface. By using a bed base or foundation, or a bed frame with supportive slats, you’ll allow airflow throughout the mattress, resulting in a cooler, less stuffy sleeping experience.
HOW DO I KNOW MY BED SLATS HAVE ENOUGH SUPPORT?
Your mattress also needs to be properly supported. If your base flexes or sags, your new mattress will contour to it, just as it does with your body. For bed frames that use slats, each slat should be arranged no more than 5" apart. These slats should be strong, non-flexible, and wide enough to create a stable, non-yielding platform.
WHAT IS A SLATTED MATTRESS BASE?
A slatted mattress base includes rows of slats across the frame that support your mattress. For proper support, each slat should be arranged no more than 5" apart. These slats should be strong, non-flexible, and wide enough to create a stable, non-yielding platform.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FOUNDATION AND A BOX SPRING?
Unlike a box spring, a foundation does not have springs in it. For a hybrid mattress (like Avocado’s) that already has an innerspring unit, a box spring can throw off the feel of the mattress by making it feel too bouncy. A foundation is a stable, unmoving support platform for your mattress for frames that necessitate them.
