CERTIFIED ORGANIC. COMPLETELY WOOL-FREE. NATURALLY SUPPORTIVE.

The Avocado Vegan Mattress contains no wool or animal materials — it's certified by Vegan Action® and PETA®-Approved Vegan. But unlike many vegan mattresses built on polyurethane memory foam, ours is also GOTS-certified organic: GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, made with 95% or more certified organic latex, and GOTS-certified organic cotton over our patented zoned coil support. That's the difference — vegan and organic, not one at the expense of the other. Backed by a 1-year sleep trial and a 25-year limited warranty.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX

Instead of polyurethane foams, Avocado Vegan mattresses feature GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex (CU 863637) rubber foam from sustainably harvested latex from our facilities in India and Guatemala.

MADE WITHOUT WOOL

Our Avocado Vegan Mattress replaces the wool used in our Green Mattress with USDA organic certified cotton. No wool or animal-based products are used anywhere in our Vegan Mattress. Best of all, it still meets all federal flammability standards.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON

Our luxurious, button-tufted mattress covers are made with breathable GOTS-certified organic cotton (CU 863637) — one of the softest and most comfortable fabrics. Organic cotton is cool, wicks away moisture, and, better still, is more sustainable than conventional cotton.

MEDIUM

Our standard Avocado Vegan Mattress sets the standard for affordable ecoluxury. At 11 inches thick, with 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic latex over our zoned coil support, it delivers a balanced, medium feel — supportive but forgiving — that works across sleep positions. To adjust the feel, you can add a mattress topper at any time.

PLUSH

For a softer, more cushioned feel, upgrade to the attached European-style pillow-top, which adds a 2-inch layer of GOLS-certified organic latex — 5 inches of latex in total. At 13 inches thick, it's suited to side and combination sleepers, heavier individuals, and anyone wanting more pressure relief.

PETA Approved

VEGAN CERTIFIED,
PETA APPROVED

Vegan Action (the Vegan Awareness Foundation) in Richmond, Virginia, has certified our Vegan Mattress. It is also a PETA-approved product. That means our vegan mattresses are third-party validated not to contain wool or other animal products or byproducts that have been tested on animals. Instead of wool, we use a generous layer of USDA certified organic cotton batting.

NEEDLE-TUFTED BY HAND

NEEDLE-TUFTED
BY HAND

Avocado mattresses feature our distinctive, needle-tufted rosettes — a hallmark of quality. We pull cotton ribbons through every layer of the mattress in up to 32 locations, held in place by the rosettes. Needle-tufting is a time-honored technique dating back to the 17th century. Because of hand tufting, no chemical adhesives are used to bind the layers together, which also radically improves durability.

PATENTED SEVEN-ZONE SUPPORT

Our patented seven-zone innerspring (U.S. Patent No. 11,627,813) is built in-house from recycled steel with up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils. Four zones reinforce the perimeter — both long sides plus the head and foot — and three vary firmness by body region, using three distinct wire gauges. The firmest coils run through the hip and lumbar zone and across both ends; softer coils let the shoulders and legs settle in for pressure relief; narrow high-tensile coils border the long sides. Each pocketed coil moves independently to distribute weight, relieve pressure points, and reduce motion transfer.

HEAVY-DUTY HANDLES

HEAVY-DUTY HANDLES

Two upholstered handles adorn both side panels of the mattress, neatly sewn for a tight fit. Our handles won’t bunch out underneath the sheets. Moving or adjusting your vegan bed is hassle-free. But you never need to flip it!

GOLS-Certified Organic Latex

Our mattresses use FSC® certified (C156318) Dunlop latex because it is more eco-conscious than Talalay latex, which requires more processing. We make our GOLS-certified organic latex from co-owned farmer's societies and processing facilities in India and Guatemala, operating under the USDA's National Organic Program. Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, and requires no adhesives to seam it together. It's made with equal to or more than 95% certified organic latex, the highest possible standard, and processed in a GOLS-certified organic facility in India. Our standard Avocado mattress uses two seamless layers of organic latex — 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) and a 1-inch layer (D65) in the base. On the Avocado Mattress with the optional attached Pillow-Top, we use three seamless layers of organic latex — 2 inches in the Euro-top layer (D65), 2 more inches in the comfort layer (D65), and another 1-inch layer (D65) in the base. We do not use blended or synthetic latex and the seams will not break down over time. We needle-tuft our mattresses by hand so they contain no chemical adhesives to bind the layers. To be extra thorough, our latex is even eco-INSTITUT label certified, a certification for products fulfilling the strictest requirements on pollutants and emissions following the latest state-of-the-art international research and science.

GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Batting

Rather than wool, our Vegan Mattress uses 400 grams per square foot of GOTS-certified organic cotton batting sourced from family farmers in India. It is a USDA-certified organic cotton fiber farmed to NOP farming standards.

GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Cover

For a luxurious and premium finish, we use GOTS-certified organic cotton (CU863637) in a soft, natural color blended with 3% elastane for functional stretch and enhanced durability—fully compliant with GOTS standards. This fabric is quilted over a generous layer of organic cotton, supported by a thin, non-woven backing—added in accordance with GOTS accessory requirements—to prevent the organic cotton batting from shifting or clumping and to keep natural fibers from working through the outer cotton over time. Reinforced tape edge seams are made with a GOTS-certified organic cotton tape edge and are double-stitched.

OUR PATENTED INNERSPRING & FABRIC-ENCASED COIL SUPPORT SYSTEM

Our patented seven-zone innerspring system (U.S. Patent No. 11,627,813) uses between 684 coils in a Twin and 1,379 in a Cal King, each individually wrapped so it responds on its own. Four of the seven zones reinforce the perimeter — both long sides plus the head and foot — for consistent edge-to-edge support throughout the life of the mattress. The other three vary firmness by body region. It is engineered and manufactured by Avocado, not sourced from a third-party supplier.

In our Firm, Medium, Plush, and Ultra Plush, four coil types are placed across three wire gauges. The firmest 14-gauge coils run through the center hip and lumbar zone where the body needs the most support, and across the head and foot for end reinforcement. 15-gauge coils fill the two largest zones, carrying the shoulders at one end and the legs at the other, so the shoulder settles in rather than being propped up. 16-gauge wire is used twice: narrow, high-tensile border coils along both long sides, and wider, softer coils nested between every other row, which blend the firmness change from one zone to the next so the transition is gradual rather than an edge you can feel. Because the head and foot zones are identical, the mattress is built to be rotated regularly and wear evenly. Our Extra Firm uses two 3-inch 14-gauge units stacked and separated by an organic-latex-infused coconut pad, with no softer comfort or transition coils anywhere — every coil identical, for maximum support.

Each coil floats within food-grade, non-woven polypropylene for airflow and responsive, body-contouring support, and every coil is pocketed under compression, so it arrives preloaded and supports from the first ounce of pressure rather than needing to be broken in. Zoning this precise only works if every coil stays exactly where it's placed, and the bond between pocket rows is what guarantees it: each gauge locked in its zone, the transition coils held between rows, for the life of the mattress. That bond is a hot-melt adhesive: waxes and resin, an antioxidant, and the EVA polymer found in everyday hot glue. It's a functional accessory permitted under GOTS, it's UL® Formaldehyde-Free validated, and we publish every component because we chose a certification that requires it — Waxes (CAS 8002-74-2), Resin (CAS 8050-26-8), Antioxidant (CAS 6683-19-8), EVA Polymer (CAS 24937-78-8). Then we test the assembled unit, not just the materials in it. The innerspring is covered by all six of our finished-product certifications — GOTS, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, UL® Formaldehyde-Free, and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I, the strictest tier, held to the limits set for products safe for infants.

Natural Graphite Powder

Graphite powder is a natural product with a long history of safe use. The graphite we add to the latex acts as a naturally derived fire retardant barrier and exceeds all U.S. standards for flammability. Graphite powder is commonly called expandable graphite. When it comes into contact with fire, the graphite expands fast and absorbs oxygen. Of course, for anything to burn, you need oxygen. This process prevents burning, and it does not release any toxins, either. View Our Open Flame Test Results

Firmness Rating & Performance Testing

Our standard Avocado Vegan Mattress delivers a balanced, medium feel — cushioned but supportive, with the zoned coil system keeping your spine aligned rather than letting you sink. It suits most sleepers and every sleep position, and it's an easy choice when partners prefer different feels. The optional pillow-top adds a softer, plusher surface that cradles the body's natural curves — better suited to side and combination sleepers, heavier individuals, and anyone focused on pressure relief. Because the seven-zone coil unit is symmetrical head-to-foot, rotate the mattress regularly so it wears evenly.

Vegan Certified – No Wool or Animal Products

Avocado vegan products contain no animal or animal byproducts, such as wool. However, we produce products that contain wool, and shared machinery and facilities are used between our vegan and non-vegan products. However, we have demonstrated acceptable steps to thoroughly clean and sanitize all surfaces, tools, and machinery used between vegan and non-vegan production cycles to minimize cross-contamination. View Our Vegan Certification

Tested for PFAS: None Detected

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are synthetic chemicals used industry-wide for waterproofing, stain resistance, and flame retardancy. They persist in the environment and the human body, which is why they're called "forever chemicals." We don't use chemical treatments or chemical flame retardants, and we validate that claim with lab testing.

Our 2026 independent third-party program covers 679 individual PFAS substances — up from 320 in 2024 — across our organic cotton, organic latex, crib mattress core, and every component of our Waterproof Mattress Protector. Testing was performed by Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, using targeted LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methods at a detection limit of 10 parts per billion for most substances. The result across every component tested: none detected.

Some industry certifications screen a smaller panel — around 80 compounds — and rely on a 50-ppm total-fluorine threshold, roughly 5,000 times less sensitive than our per-substance limit, and don't publish the underlying results. Avocado publishes the full Intertek reports, substance by substance and component by component, because transparency builds trust. Read our PFAS testing results from 2024 and 2026.

Legal Label

A law label is a legally required tag describing the interior filling materials of a mattress. Few companies share this before purchase. At Avocado, we have always believed differently. Inside every Avocado Vegan Mattress: natural latex foam rubber, organic cotton fiber, an individually wrapped coil spring unit, and a fabric cover of organic cotton and elastane (which provides stretch and recovery in the knit cover). No wool is used. Assembled in Fullerton, California, with domestic and imported materials. Not inside any Avocado mattress: polyurethane foam, memory foam, adhesives between comfort layers, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or PFAS. Read the law label for every Avocado product.

Frequently Asked Questions

It contains no animal materials of any kind. Where our Green Mattress uses organic wool, the Vegan Mattress uses GOTS-certified organic cotton batting instead — so there's no wool, silk, or other animal product anywhere in the build. It's third-party certified by Vegan Action (the Vegan Awareness Foundation) and is PETA-Approved Vegan. It still meets all federal flammability standards without wool, using a naturally derived flame barrier rather than chemical flame retardants.
Not because there's anything wrong with wool — it's an excellent natural comfort layer and flame barrier, which is exactly why our Green Mattress uses it. But wool isn't the only way to achieve either. For people who avoid all animal materials — whether by ethical choice or a wool sensitivity — the Vegan Mattress replaces wool with GOTS-certified organic cotton batting, which is breathable, moisture-wicking, and equally organic. You get the same certified organic sleep, wool-free.
They answer two different questions, and one doesn't guarantee the other. "Vegan" only means no animal materials like wool or silk — and many vegan mattresses are built on polyurethane memory foam, which is petroleum-derived. A mattress can be fully vegan and still be made almost entirely of synthetic foam. "Organic" under GOTS governs how the materials are grown and processed and requires independent audits. The Avocado Vegan Mattress is both: vegan and GOTS-certified organic, using GOLS-certified organic latex instead of polyurethane foam. Vegan and organic — not one at the expense of the other.
Yes. Most organic mattresses use organic wool as the comfort layer and flame barrier, so choosing vegan usually means giving up either the wool or the organic certification. The Avocado Vegan Mattress does neither: it replaces wool with GOTS-certified organic cotton, keeps GOLS-certified organic latex, and remains certified organic at the finished-product level. Choosing the vegan version means no compromise on organic integrity, certifications, or quality.
The construction is nearly identical — the same GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, the same patented zoned coil support, the same finished-product certifications. The single difference is the comfort layer: the Green Mattress uses GOTS organic wool, which the Vegan Mattress replaces with GOTS organic cotton batting so it contains no animal materials. Both are certified organic and made without polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass.
No. The Vegan Mattress meets the identical federal flammability standards and carries the same finished-product certifications as our wool Green Mattress — GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold. Removing wool changes the comfort material, not the safety or the certifications. It's independently tested and verified to the same standard either way.
Wool is a natural flame barrier, so removing it raises a fair question. In its place, the Vegan Mattress uses a naturally derived graphite barrier within the latex. When exposed to flame, the graphite expands rapidly and absorbs the oxygen a fire needs to burn — passing federal open-flame testing with no chemical flame retardants and no fiberglass. We publish our open-flame test results, so it's verifiable rather than simply asserted.
It's natural Dunlop latex — GOLS-certified organic, made with 95% or more certified organic latex, tapped from rubber trees at our own facilities in India and Guatemala. We use no blended or synthetic latex. We choose Dunlop over Talalay because it's denser, more durable, and requires less processing, which makes it the more eco-conscious choice. Natural latex is also plant-derived, which is part of what makes this mattress vegan.
The latex is encased beneath the organic cotton batting and cover, so there's no direct skin contact, and washing during manufacturing removes the majority of the water-soluble proteins associated with latex sensitivity. That said, if you have a diagnosed natural latex allergy, this is a consideration worth discussing with your doctor, since the mattress does contain natural latex. If you're avoiding latex specifically for an allergy rather than for vegan reasons, our team can point you toward alternatives.
There's no polyurethane foam here, so there's none of the petroleum off-gassing associated with conventional and memory-foam mattresses. You may notice a faint natural scent from the organic latex when you first unbox it, which is normal and dissipates within a few days of airing out. Low emissions are third-party verified: the mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified against strict VOC limits for bedrooms and children's rooms, and Formaldehyde-Free verified by UL.
Yes. Organic cotton takes the place of wool as a breathable, moisture-wicking comfort layer, and cotton sleeps naturally cool. The bigger cooling advantage is what the mattress avoids: unlike memory foam, which insulates and traps body heat, organic latex has an open structure that breathes, and the pocketed coil system underneath keeps air moving through the mattress. The result is a temperature-neutral surface without needing wool, gel treatments, or synthetic cooling chemicals.
The standard Vegan Mattress has a balanced, medium feel that works across sleep positions and is an easy choice when partners prefer different feels. Adding the optional European-style pillow-top gives a softer, plusher surface better suited to side and combination sleepers, heavier individuals, and anyone focused on pressure relief. The patented seven-zone coil system supports the hips, back, and shoulders in both builds, with firmer border coils for edge-to-edge support.
Neither. There's no fiberglass anywhere in the mattress — our flame barrier is a naturally derived graphite layer instead, common as fiberglass is in lower-cost mattresses. And because we don't use chemical treatments or chemical flame retardants, we validate that through an independent third-party PFAS testing program with Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, screening individual substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity using targeted LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methods. Full reports are published in our Help Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. It's GOTS-certified organic (CU863637) at the finished-product level, which means the entire assembled mattress — not just one material — is independently audited and listed in the public GOTS database. GOTS is recognized under the USDA's National Organic Program and is the world's leading organic textile standard. If a mattress isn't GOTS-certified and listed in that database, it isn't a certified organic mattress.
No — and it's the distinction most shoppers miss. GOLS certifies the latex as an organic material; it says nothing about the rest of the mattress. Only finished-product GOTS certification verifies that the whole assembled mattress was audited to the organic standard. Many latex hybrids carry GOLS on the latex but have no finished-product GOTS certification, so they aren't certified organic mattresses even when they're marketed that way.
No. No Avocado mattress uses fiberglass — not as a fire barrier, not anywhere. Fiberglass is common in lower-cost mattresses as a cheap flame barrier, but it can escape the cover and contaminate a home. The Eco Organic meets federal flammability standards with GOTS-certified organic wool instead, a fiber that's naturally fire-resistant.
No. There's no polyurethane foam, memory foam, or petroleum-based foam of any kind. Comfort and support come from GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex over a recycled-steel innerspring unit — durable, buoyant materials that don't off-gas or break down the way commodity foams do.
No. We screen for 679 individual PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity through Intertek, an independent ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, using targeted LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methods. Across every component tested — organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex, and the recycled-steel innerspring unit — the result was none detected. We publish the full substance-by-substance PFAS testing results in our Help Center.
We don't use adhesives to bond the comfort layers — those are held in place mechanically. The coil unit is assembled with a small amount of adhesive, and because the mattress is EWG Verified — a certification that requires full ingredient disclosure — we publish exactly what's in it, by CAS number: waxes, resin, an antioxidant, and EVA polymer. Every component was screened against EWG's health criteria, and the finished mattress is also verified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde-Free — independently lab-tested for formaldehyde and VOC off-gassing. We'd rather name and verify what's in our mattress than make a broader claim we can't document component by component.
Six independent standards verify the finished product: GOTS (finished-product organic), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde-Free. Material-level certifications include GOLS on the latex, plus FSC, RWS, and eco-INSTITUT. Together they screen for organic integrity, harmful substances, health hazards, indoor-air emissions, added formaldehyde, and ingredient transparency — no single certification catches everything, which is why the Eco Organic holds all six at once.
They answer two different questions. Organic describes what the mattress is made of and how those materials were grown and processed; non-toxic is about what the finished product has been screened against. A mattress can be one without the other. The Eco Organic is both — GOTS-certified organic at the finished-product level, and independently screened by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, and MADE SAFE.
It has a balanced medium feel — a true middle ground that suits the widest range of sleepers, and it tends to sleep slightly firmer than a plush mattress. Back and stomach sleepers get steady support, while side sleepers who want more cushioning can add the Eco Organic Topper for a plusher surface. The latex responds the moment you move rather than trapping you in place the way memory foam does.
It can be, with one thing worth knowing. The medium feel gives side sleepers reasonable pressure relief, but because it leans slightly firm, side sleepers who prefer a soft, cradling surface may want to add the Eco Organic Topper. If plush pressure relief is your priority, the Avocado Green Mattress in Plush offers more latex and a softer feel.
Yes, and it does it through materials rather than chemical treatments. Organic wool wicks moisture and buffers temperature, organic latex has an open-cell structure that breathes instead of trapping heat, and the individually wrapped coil unit is mostly open space, so air moves freely all night. There are no cooling gels or chemical coatings — just fibers and airflow doing the work.
Yes. As a latex-and-coil hybrid, the Eco Organic flexes with an adjustable base while keeping its structure. It pairs with our Eco Adjustable Base, or any adjustable frame that meets the structural support requirements outlined in our warranty.
Because the price is the only economical thing about it. A typical budget hybrid reaches its price with polyurethane foam, and sometimes fiberglass and chemical flame retardants. The Eco Organic reaches its price through vertical integration — owned farms, owned coil manufacturing, no middlemen — while still delivering certified organic latex, wool, and cotton, a recycled-steel innerspring, finished-product GOTS certification, and six independent safety certifications. You pay a little more for materials you'd actually want in the bed you spend a third of your life in.
Structure, not compromise. Avocado is one of the most vertically integrated mattress companies in America: we own our factories, run our own organic wool and latex farms, and manufacture our own innersprings. Owning the supply chain instead of paying middlemen at every step is how we offer a finished-product GOTS-certified organic mattress at a price the category rarely sees.
Both are GOTS-certified organic with the same six-standard safety stack; the difference is construction and options. The Eco Organic is the value model — one balanced medium feel, a single 8-inch coil unit, a 2-inch latex comfort layer, and a 10-year warranty. The Green Mattress is the step up — five firmness levels, a patented seven-zone coil system, more latex, hand needle-tufting, and a 25-year warranty. Choose the Eco for certified organic sleep at the most accessible price; choose the Green for firmness choice, zoned support, and longer coverage.
It's assembled in Fullerton, California, with domestic and imported materials, and our coils are made in our own facility. Avocado is a Certified B Corporation and Climate Label Certified, and manufactures with an 88% landfill-diversion rate independently validated by UL Solutions.
