THE FIRMEST MATTRESS WE MAKE

No sink, no bounce, no soft spots: a flat, stable surface that stays consistent from edge to edge and from head to foot. That comes from two full coil units of 14-gauge double-tempered recycled steel, the heaviest gauge we use, held apart by a dense coconut fiber pad. No adhesives bind the layers together — they're held by hand needle-tufting with organic wool rosettes, so there are no glue seams between layers to break down or harden over time. One honest note on feel: heavier sleepers will register slightly more give than lighter ones, simply because more weight compresses more coil. It stays definitively firm at either end of that range. Best for back and stomach sleepers who need alignment under load, athletes, and anyone who has found every other mattress too soft. Strict side sleepers will likely find it too firm — add an Organic Latex Mattress Topper, or step down to the Avocado Green Firm Mattress.

Avocado Extra Firm Mattress Over Engineered

BUILT FOR HEAVY SLEEPERS

Up to 550 lbs per person, or 1,100 lbs total — our highest capacity by a wide margin. Two full coil units of double-tempered recycled steel, wound in our own facility rather than bought from a supplier, which is why both units run uniform 14-gauge instead of whatever a catalog offers. Every spring sits in its own pocket, in both layers — no helical wire threading the coils together, no interconnected grid anywhere in the mattress. Uniform gauge throughout means the perimeter is as firm as the center, with no soft edges. Pair it with our Heavy Duty Foundation, rated to 2,000 lbs of total load.

Avocado Extra Firm Mattress - Only GOTS Certified Mattress for Heavy People

FIRMLY ORGANIC

The only extra firm, heavy-duty mattress certified organic to GOTS at the finished-product level — not just organic materials, but a finished mattress audited from farm to factory. Organic Dunlop latex certified to GOLS, plus organic wool and cotton. Verified against five independent nontoxic standards: OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, and GREENGUARD Gold and UL® Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC MATERIALS

CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX

Organic Dunlop latex, certified to GOLS for organic content and FSC® for responsible sourcing, from co-owned farmer societies in India and Guatemala. In the Extra Firm we use two inches of soft D65 — enough give at the surface that you aren't lying on steel, over a support core that doesn't move.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC WOOL

Organic wool, certified to the Responsible Wool Standard, at one ounce per square foot. It wicks moisture, resists odor, and passes flammability standards on its own — no chemical flame retardants.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON

A breathable organic cotton cover, hand needle-tufted with wool yarn rosettes. Part of the GOTS-certified finished mattress, audited from farm to factory. Grown without synthetic pesticides or defoliants.

Avocado Extra Firm Mattress Naturally Cooling

EXTRA COOL

Heat gets trapped when you sink into a mattress: polyurethane foam wraps around you and holds warmth against your body. This one doesn't let you sink. You sleep on the surface, with air moving through it. No polyurethane foam of any kind. No phase-change coatings that wear off after a year. Instead: perforated organic Dunlop latex ventilated with hundreds of airflow channels, an organic coconut fiber pad infused with organic latex, organic wool that wicks moisture away from your skin, and an innerspring core that breathes by design. Cooling comes from the build, not a treatment.

Avocado Extra Firm Mattress Low Profile

LOWER PROFILE

Most mattresses marketed to heavier sleepers look thick. Almost all of that height is polyurethane foam stacked in layers, and foam is the part that compresses, softens, and leaves body impressions. The Extra Firm is 9.75 inches, and nearly all of it is load-bearing: two full coil units of 14-gauge steel, a dense coconut fiber pad, and firm D65 latex. Nothing in the stack is there to add height for no reason. That's how it supports 550 lbs per person while sitting four inches lower than mattresses rated for half the weight. It also fits standard sheets and works on platform beds without the stepladder effect — a practical advantage, not just a visual one.

Avocado Extra Firm Mattress Strong Support

STRONG SUPPORT

Queen and larger Extra Firm mattresses need a rigid center support beam with at least one leg to the floor, and slats no more than 5 inches apart. Our Heavy Duty Foundation clears both: slats 2.5 inches wide spaced just 2 inches apart, and a 2,000 lb total load rating — matched to this mattress the way our Standard Foundation is matched to the rest of the line. Available in 3.5-inch low profile and 7.25-inch standard heights, with or without legs.

Weight Support: Up to 550 lbs per person, or 1,100 lbs total. Two full coil units instead of one — 1,600 individually wrapped coils in Queen, all 14-gauge double-tempered recycled steel, separated by an organic coconut fiber pad infused with GOLS-certified organic latex. The highest weight capacity of any GOTS-certified organic mattress. Perforated CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX

Our Dunlop latex carries both GOLS certification (CU 863637) for organic content and FSC® certification (FSC-C156318) for responsible plantation management. It's sourced from co-owned farmer societies and processing facilities in India and Guatemala operating under the USDA's National Organic Program, with 95% or more certified organic content and processing in GOLS-certified facilities.

In the Extra Firm, we use D65 — our firmest Dunlop density, perforated and ventilated so air moves through it rather than sitting against your body. It sits directly on the coconut fiber pad and carries load with it; there's no soft transition layer here. Also eco-INSTITUT® label certified (119-34212-001), confirming low emissions and pollutant content.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC WOOL

A one-ounce-per-square-foot layer of pure organic wool sits beneath the cotton cover, certified to the Responsible Wool Standard by Textile Exchange® for animal welfare and land management. Wool does three things here. It wicks moisture away from the surface, which matters more the warmer you sleep. It resists odor, so the mattress stays fresh without treatment. And it passes federal flammability standards on its own — which is why there are no chemical flame retardants in this mattress, and no rayon or polyester blended into the wool to get there. It's also a renewable material, and an alternative for anyone sensitive to down or synthetic bedding.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON

For a luxurious and premium finish, we use GOTS-certified organic cotton (CU863637) in a soft, natural color blended with 3% elastane for functional stretch and enhanced durability—fully compliant with GOTS standards. This fabric is quilted over a generous layer of organic wool, supported by a thin, non-woven backing—added in accordance with GOTS accessory requirements—to prevent the wool from shifting or clumping and to keep natural fibers from working through the outer cotton over time. Responsibly and ethically sourced from India, this durable textile is hand-needle-tufted using organic wool yarn rosettes. These secure the cotton ticking and internal mattress layers without chemical or water-based adhesives. Reinforced edge seams are double-stitched for added durability, and four heavy-duty upholstered handles make the mattress easy to rotate or move. Organic cotton complements the wool comfort layers, ensuring this mattress sleeps cool without synthetic fabrics or flame retardants.

Engineered for Extra-Firm Back Support

The Avocado Extra Firm Mattress features a purpose-built, heavy-duty support system that delivers exceptional firmness, pressure relief, and long-term durability. Rather than relying on thick synthetic foam layers, this mattress features a dual-coil construction separated by natural coconut fiber pads, designed to meet the needs of heavier sleepers, big and tall individuals, athletes, or anyone who prefers an ultra-supportive mattress.

The mattress includes two 3-inch layers of individually wrapped, heavy-gauge coils, each floating independently within a food-grade, non-woven polypropylene fabric. We manufacture these coil units ourselves rather than buying them from a spring supplier — which is why both units run uniform 14-gauge double-tempered recycled steel instead of whatever a catalog offers.

Three 0.5-inch layers of organic coconut fiber infused with organic latex run through the mattress: one above the top coil unit, one between the two units, and one below the bottom. The top pad stiffens the surface beneath the latex. The middle pad keeps the two coil units from nesting into each other, so they behave as a single rigid structure rather than two stacked springs. The bottom pad spreads load across the foundation. All three are dense enough to add firmness while staying open enough for air to move, and none of them is glued in place.

The coils are assembled using an environmentally conscious adhesive composed of tested components (Waxes: CAS 8002-74-2, Resin: CAS 8050-26-8, Antioxidant: CAS 6683-19-8, EVA Polymer: CAS 24937-78-8). They are needle-tufted by hand with up to 9 wool rosettes, eliminating the need for chemical flame retardants or glues between layers.

The entire innerspring system is part of the finished mattress that meets OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification standards, ensuring the mattress is held to the most rigorous standards for environmental safety and human health. With its advanced dual-coil design and ultra-firm feel, the Extra Firm Mattress delivers unmatched support, durability, and breathability, making it the ideal mattress for plus-size sleepers, back and stomach sleepers, and those seeking a firm, organic mattress that performs.

Cooling Mattress Design

Heat is a bigger problem the more you weigh. More mass means more heat to shed — and on a conventional mattress, more weight means sinking deeper into foam that holds it against you. This one doesn't let you sink, and there's no polyurethane foam in it to begin with. Organic wool sits directly beneath the cotton cover, wicking moisture off your skin and regulating in both directions — the same layer that keeps you cool in July keeps you warm in January. Below it, perforated latex and two units of open coil give heat somewhere to go.

Tested for Performance

Avocado Mattresses undergo rigorous third-party durability testing, including the industry-standard Rollator and Cornell tests. We proudly publish our test results to ensure full transparency and to validate the durability of our natural, organic design.

NO FLAME RETARDANTS

As a natural wool mattress, this design meets flammability standards without the use of chemicals — a safer choice for eco-conscious sleepers. The Avocado Extra Firm Mattress uses only GOTS-certified organic wool, which is naturally fire-resistant.

Tested for PFAS Chemicals: None Detected

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are synthetic chemicals used industry-wide for waterproofing, stain resistance, and flame retardancy. They persist in the environment and the human body, which is why they're called "forever chemicals." We don't use chemical treatments or chemical flame retardants, and we validate that claim with lab testing.

Our 2026 independent third-party program covers 679 individual PFAS substances — up from 320 in 2024 — across our organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex, crib mattress core, and every component of our Waterproof Mattress Protector. Testing was performed by Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, using targeted LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methods at a detection limit of 10 parts per billion for most substances. The result across every component tested: none detected.

Some industry certifications screen a smaller panel — around 80 compounds — and rely on a 50-ppm total-fluorine threshold, roughly 5,000 times less sensitive than our per-substance limit, and don't publish the underlying results. Avocado publishes the full Intertek reports, substance by substance and component by component, because transparency builds trust. Read our PFAS testing results from 2024 and 2026.

25-YEAR WARRANTY

Years 1 - 10: Full coverage, Non-Prorated. Years 11 - 25: Limited Coverage, Prorated. To maintain structural integrity and ensure warranty coverage, the Extra Firm Mattress must be used on a properly designed support system. All Avocado foundations, bunkie boards, bed frames, and adjustable bases meet these requirements when used correctly and unaltered. If using a third-party bed frame, it must include a rigid center support beam with at least one leg extending to the floor for queen-size beds and larger. We strongly recommend pairing this mattress with a heavy-duty foundation designed for higher weight capacities to prevent sagging and extend the mattress's lifespan. Read Our Warranty.

1-Year Sleep Trial

Your 1-Year Sleep Trial begins after you receive your mattress and is limited to one mattress per household, with a minimum of 30 days. Read our refund policy terms & conditions. Shipping and in-home delivery & setup fees are non-refundable. Returned mattresses incur a $99 fee. The mattress box must be opened within 30 days of receipt. Law Label

A law label is a legally required tag describing the interior filling materials of a mattress. Few companies share it before purchase. We always have. Inside every Avocado Green Extra Firm Mattress: natural latex foam rubber, organic wool, coconut fiber pads, an individually wrapped coil spring unit, and a fabric cover of 97% organic cotton and 3% elastane, which gives the knit its stretch and recovery. Assembled in Fullerton, California, with domestic and imported materials. Not inside this mattress: polyurethane foam, adhesives between comfort layers, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass. One note on the wording. Law labels use generic filling categories, not certification language — which is why ours reads "natural latex foam rubber" rather than naming the GOLS certification behind it. Same material, regulated vocabulary. Separately, we test finished mattresses for 679 PFAS substances through Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab, at a 10 ppb detection limit. None have been detected. Read the law label for every Avocado product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Up to 550 lbs per person, or 1,100 lbs total, the highest capacity of any mattress we make. Queen and larger sizes need a rigid center support beam with at least one leg to the floor, and slats spaced no more than 5 inches apart, for the warranty to apply. See What Is the Weight Limit on Your Mattresses for the full requirements.
10 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the firmest mattress we make. There's no sink and no bounce, just a flat, stable surface that stays consistent from edge to edge. See Which Firmness Is Right for Me to compare it against the rest of the line.
For many people who sleep on their back or stomach, it can help alleviate or prevent back pain by promoting proper spinal alignment. The two coil units keep your hips and shoulders level rather than letting them sink at different rates. If you sleep on your side or need pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, this mattress will likely feel too firm. Add an organic latex mattress topper for contouring, or consider the Avocado Green Firm Mattress instead.
Any base works as long as it has a rigid center support beam with at least one leg to the floor at Queen or larger, and slats spaced no more than 5 inches apart. Our Heavy Duty Foundation is rated to 2,000 lbs of total load, with four center rails at Queen, King, and California King, and three at Twin, Twin XL, and Full, compared to two on our Standard Foundation. Up to 14 slats, each 2.5 inches wide and 11/16 inch thick, sit just 2 inches apart, less than half the maximum spacing our warranty allows. It comes in a 3.5-inch low profile or a 7.25-inch standard height, with legs sold separately.
Choose on preference first. The Firm gives you firm support with some contouring at the hips and shoulders. The Extra Firm gives you almost none, a flat and stable surface closer to sleeping on a firm floor than on a conventional mattress. Structurally they're built for different jobs: the Firm uses a single 8-inch coil unit with seven ergonomic zones reinforced on all four sides, and heavier wire through the perimeter and hip zone to vary support by body region. The Extra Firm uses two stacked 3-inch units with no zoning at all, uniform 14-gauge throughout, separated by coconut fiber pads and built for load capacity rather than contouring. Both use the same 2-inch layer of organic Dunlop latex on top, so the difference in feel comes entirely from the coils beneath. The Firm supports up to 350 lbs per person and stands 11.5 inches tall; the Extra Firm supports up to 550 and stands 9.75 inches. If you've always found mattresses too soft, or you grew up sleeping on a futon, floor bedding, or a board bed, the Extra Firm is likely what you're looking for regardless of your weight.
Our adjustable base supports up to 850 lbs total, which is below this mattress's 1,100 lb rating. If you and your partner together approach that number, we recommend the Heavy Duty Foundation or a solid platform frame instead.
Most mattresses marketed to heavier sleepers are 13 to 15 inches tall, and almost all of that height is polyurethane foam stacked in layers. The Extra Firm is 9.75 inches of almost entirely load-bearing material: two full coil units of 14-gauge steel and three dense coconut fiber pads, with two inches of latex at the surface. It supports 550 lbs per person while sitting several inches lower than mattresses rated for half that.
There's a two-inch layer of soft organic Dunlop latex at the surface, plus a double layer of organic wool beneath the cotton cover. You feel give in the top couple of inches. What you don't feel is sink, because everything below that is coil and coconut fiber, and none of it moves. The firmness comes from below, not from the surface.
No adhesives bind the comfort layers, so there are no glue seams to break down, and there's no polyurethane foam to develop body impressions. The layers are needle-tufted by hand with organic wool rosettes. Our 25-year warranty covers visible indentations, with the first ten years fully non-prorated.
Yes. It supports up to 550 lbs per person or 1,100 lbs total, on two full coil units of 14-gauge double-tempered recycled steel, 1,600 individually wrapped coils in Queen and up to 2,112 in King. Uniform heavy gauge throughout both units means the perimeter is as firm as the center, so there are no soft edges to sit on.
Heavier sleepers will register slightly more give than lighter ones, simply because more weight compresses more coil. It stays definitively firm at either end of that range.
Every coil in both units sits in its own fabric pocket, so each one responds only to the weight directly above it. Nothing is threaded or connected, with no helical wire and no interconnected grid at any layer. Some mattresses in this category use offset or threaded coil systems where movement travels across the surface. This one doesn't, and that matters more at higher combined weight, when there's more force behind each movement.
Heat gets trapped when you sink into a mattress. This one doesn't let you sink, and there's no polyurethane foam in it to hold heat against you. Organic wool sits beneath the cotton cover to wick moisture off your skin, and below it, perforated organic Dunlop latex and two units of open coil give heat somewhere to go. There are no phase-change coatings or gel infusions to wear off over time.
Closer than a conventional mattress, but not the same. There's no sink, so your weight is supported on the surface rather than distributed into the mattress. You still get soft latex and wool above the coils, so pressure at the shoulders and hips is spread rather than concentrated the way it is on a hard floor.
Three half-inch pads of coconut fiber infused with organic latex, one above the top coil unit, one between the two units, and one below the bottom. They stiffen the surface, keep the coil units from nesting into each other, and let air move where a foam layer would trap it. No adhesives hold them in place. See What's Inside an Avocado Mattress for the full layer-by-layer build.
Minimal sinkage means your spine stays aligned and the surface doesn't shift as you move. Weight is distributed evenly rather than concentrated at the hips and shoulders.
The finished mattress is certified organic to GOTS by Control Union (CU 863637), not just the materials inside it. That means the whole product is audited from farm to factory, including the substances used in processing and the working conditions in the supply chain. It's also verified against five independent standards: OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I (24.HUS.86422), EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified. The organic Dunlop latex separately carries GOLS certification for organic content, FSC® certification for responsible plantation management, and the eco-INSTITUT® label for low emissions. See our certifications page for details.
Yes. We test finished mattresses for 679 PFAS substances through Intertek, an independent ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, at a 10 parts-per-billion detection limit. None have been detected.
It's an innerspring mattress with organic latex above the coils, so it's sometimes categorized as a hybrid. The distinction that matters is what the comfort layer is made of. Most hybrids use polyurethane or memory foam over coils. This one uses organic Dunlop latex and organic wool, with no polyurethane foam of any kind. See our coil specifications guide for the full innerspring detail.
Rotate it 180 degrees, head to foot, every few months. Don't flip it. The mattress is single-sided, with the latex comfort layer on top and a cotton canvas base underneath, so rotating evens out wear across the coils while flipping would put you on the base. See Do I Need to Flip or Rotate My Mattress for more.
Every Avocado mattress comes with a 1-year sleep trial, after a 30-night break-in period. If it's close but not quite right, an organic latex mattress topper adds contouring at the hips and shoulders without changing the support underneath. If you want a step down in firmness, the Avocado Green Firm Mattress is the next model in the line.
