Avocado mattress fully GOTS-certified with MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and EWG VERIFIED®

WE CERTIFY
EVERY MATTRESS

Every Avocado crib mattress holds GOTS finished-product certification — the entire mattress, not just the materials inside it. Every crib mattress, adult and infant, is certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, the most stringent testing standard for baby products — the first innerspring brand in America to achieve it. Together with MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold, that's five independent standards verifying what your baby sleeps on."

Non-toxic organic mattress certified by GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD, and EWG VERIFIED®

NONTOXIC IS A
CERTIFICATION

Handmade in Los Angeles, our GOTS-certified organic crib mattresses are crafted from breathable, certified organic materialss, including organic cotton, latex, wool, and cocofiber — and are always free from polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, and PLA. No built-in waterproof layer: the organic sleep surface stays uncompromised. Every mattress is certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, and GREENGUARD Gold — five independent standards verifying what your baby sleeps on.

Organic mattress with natural latex comfort layers and ergonomic coil zones for full-body support

BUILT FOR HOW BABIES SLEEP & GROW

Newborns need a firmer surface for safe spinal alignment. Toddlers need something softer as they grow. Our Green and Luxury crib mattresses feature a dual-sided design that supports both stages without buying a second mattress. Coils are manufactured in-house using recycled steel, with ergonomic zones for healthy spinal development and up to twice as many coils as conventional designs.

Avocado organic mattress with B Corp, Climate Neutral, Consumer Reports, and Good Housekeeping awards

WE RAISE THE BAR

Consumer Reports, in partnership with MADE SAFE®, named the Avocado Organic Crib Mattress one of only three Top Choices among crib mattresses evaluated — with no known material risks identified. We are a Certified B Corporation, Climate Label Certified, winners of the Pinnacle Award from 1% for the Planet, and recipients of the Good Housekeeping Seal. Every certification on this page is independently audited, annually renewed, and publicly verifiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

At minimum, look for GOTS finished-product certification — it verifies the entire mattress is certified organic, not just individual materials, and prohibits polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, and chemical adhesives. Beyond that, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I is the highest testing standard specifically designed for products used by babies and toddlers, lab-testing every component for formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, and pesticide residues. GREENGUARD Gold certifies against airborne chemical emissions in the room where your baby sleeps. MADE SAFE® and EWG Verified® screen against thousands of additional hazardous substances. Every Avocado crib mattress holds all five of these certifications simultaneously.
Class I is the most restrictive OEKO-TEX category, specifically designed for products that come into direct contact with babies and toddlers — where the margin for chemical exposure is smallest. It lab-tests every component of the finished mattress against strict human-ecological criteria for formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, and pesticide residues. Not just the cover. Not just the comfort layer. Every component. Babies spend up to 16 hours a day on their mattresses, and research shows VOC concentrations at the mattress surface can be approximately twice as high as just a few feet away. Avocado is the first innerspring mattress brand in America to achieve Class I certification across every crib mattress (certificate 24.HUS.86422).
Yes. Every Avocado crib mattress holds GOTS finished-product certification (CU863637) — meaning the entire mattress, not just individual materials, has been independently audited from farm through manufacturing. GOTS explicitly prohibits polyurethane foam, memory foam, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, and chemical adhesives in certified finished products. You can verify Avocado's certification directly in the public GOTS database at global-standard.org.
No single certification is comprehensive on its own — which is why overlapping standards matter. GOTS finished-product certification is the foundation: it verifies organic integrity from farm through manufacturing and prohibits the most harmful material categories. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I is the most rigorous lab-testing standard for baby products, screening every component for harmful substances. Together with MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold, these five standards form a compounding system designed to ensure fewer gaps go unchecked. Consumer Reports, in partnership with MADE SAFE®, named the Avocado Organic Crib Mattress one of only three Top Choices among crib mattresses evaluated, with no known material risks identified.
PLA (polylactide) is a plant-derived bioplastic — typically made from corn starch — used by some mattress brands as a waterproofing or comfort layer material. While it is plant-based rather than petroleum-derived, it is still a processed synthetic polymer, not an unprocessed natural fiber. Avocado does not use PLA in our crib mattresses. Our design philosophy keeps the certified organic sleep surface uncompromised — no built-in waterproof layer of any kind in the mattress itself. For waterproof protection, we offer a separate GOTS-certified organic crib waterproof protector that can be removed and washed, so the organic mattress beneath it stays at its purest material standard.
We limit synthetics to functional necessities. Our innerspring coils are individually encased in food-grade, non-woven polypropylene fabric — non-toxic and approved under GOTS as a functional accessory where no certified organic alternative currently meets the structural and durability requirements. There is no polyurethane foam, no memory foam, no fiberglass, no chemical flame retardants, no PLA, and no chemical adhesives between comfort layers. The certified organic sleep surface — latex, wool, cotton — is uncompromised. We name these components openly because transparency about what is and isn't yet fully solved is part of what it means to hold a verified standard.
By design. A built-in waterproof layer — whether conventional vinyl, PLA bioplastic, or polyurethane membrane — places a processed barrier between a sleeping infant and the certified organic surface beneath it. Our approach keeps the organic sleep surface at its purest material standard and handles waterproof protection as a separate, removable layer. Our GOTS-certified organic crib waterproof protector — 95% organic cotton with a thin plant-based waterproof membrane derived from cornstarch — can be removed and washed independently, keeping the mattress clean without compromising its material integrity. Multiple protectors can stay in rotation: one on the crib, one in the wash.
Select Avocado crib mattress models include a layer of GOLS-certified organic latex. The latex used in Avocado crib mattresses has been independently lab-tested and certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I — the most stringent testing standard for baby products — screening for harmful substances at the component level. It is also screened under MADE SAFE® and EWG Verified® hazard frameworks. True latex allergy is rare in infants and is typically associated with repeated medical exposure. If your child has a confirmed latex allergy, our latex-free crib mattress options are available. Consult your pediatrician if you have specific concerns.
No. GOTS finished-product certification explicitly prohibits chemical flame retardants — making their use a condition of losing certification, not just a brand preference. Avocado crib mattresses use certified organic wool as a natural flame barrier instead. Wool is inherently flame-resistant — it chars and self-extinguishes rather than burns — meeting federal flammability standards without any chemical treatment. The same material that eliminates the need for chemical flame retardants also delivers natural temperature regulation and moisture wicking for a more comfortable sleep environment.
No. Fiberglass is used as a low-cost flame barrier in many conventional mattresses — including some marketed as natural or non-toxic. When a mattress cover is removed or damaged, fiberglass particles can spread through a home and are extremely difficult to remove. GOTS finished-product certification, which every Avocado crib mattress holds, explicitly prohibits fiberglass. Avocado uses certified organic wool as a natural flame barrier instead, verified by independent audit.
A dual-sided crib mattress has two distinct sleep surfaces designed for different developmental stages. Avocado's Green and Luxury crib mattresses feature a firmer infant side that supports safe spinal alignment for newborns, and a slightly softer toddler side for the transition years. This extends usability across developmental stages without compromising material standards — and reduces the need to purchase a second mattress during the years when sleep-surface safety matters most. Simply flip the mattress when your child is ready to transition.
A well-made organic crib mattress should last through the crib years and into the toddler bed transition — typically five to seven years of use. Avocado crib mattresses are built with the same certified organic latex, wool, and cotton as our adult mattresses, and are designed for durability without structural breakdown. The dual-sided design extends useful life by providing appropriate support at each developmental stage. We recommend replacing a crib mattress that shows visible indentation, sagging, or structural damage regardless of age.
Yes. Avocado crib mattresses were included in our comprehensive PFAS screening — 320 substances tested at parts-per-billion sensitivity using LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methodology. No detectable amounts were found. We were among the first mattress brands to publish full PFAS test results publicly — including the complete substance list, methodology, and findings — in our Help Center. EWG Verified® certification, which every Avocado crib mattress holds, also prohibits PFAS as a condition of certification. View our full PFAS test results →
Yes. Consumer Reports, in partnership with MADE SAFE®, named the Avocado Organic Crib Mattress one of only three Top Choices in its 2025 evaluation of the safest crib mattresses — with no known material risks identified. That recognition cannot be purchased or self-reported. It reflects a product designed from the inside out to meet the highest safety standards for the people who need them most.
