MEETING HIGHER STANDARDS

Any brand can hold one certification. The question is what it covers and what it misses. Every Avocado mattress is GOTS-certified organic at the finished-product level and holds six finished-product certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde Free Validation. Each tests for different substances, through different methodologies, against different exposure pathways — so fewer gaps go unchecked.

No single standard catches everything. GOTS is the gold standard for organic, verifying that the finished product is certified organic from the farm through manufacturing. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I tests more than 1,000 substances known to be detrimental to human health and certifies the finished product against the strictest human-ecological criteria in the program — the tier set for babies and toddlers — which requires every component to meet those limits. MADE SAFE® screens finished products against more than 15,000 harmful substances known or suspected to harm human health and ecosystems. EWG Verified® requires full ingredient disclosure and screening against health-based criteria. Mattresses are screened against more than 8,000 chemicals of concern. GREENGUARD Gold tests for more than 360 chemical emissions into the air of the room where you sleep. UL Formaldehyde Free Validation verifies under UL 2884 that our products do not emit formaldehyde or its precursors above defined limits.

Then there are the standards that verify how we operate: B Corp for social and environmental accountability, 1% for the Planet for verified environmental giving, and the Climate Label for independently tracked emissions reduction. Together they hold the entire business — not just the product — to a verified standard.

Each of our six finished-product certifications is independently verified and can be validated through the certifying organization. Apply the same test to any mattress brand you're comparing: ask what the certification covers, whether it applies to the finished mattress or only a component, and whether the claim can be independently verified. That is what separates a system of verification from a collection of badges.

Six certifications matter, because no single certification verifies everything. GOTS verifies organic integrity. OEKO-TEX® tests against limits for harmful substances. MADE SAFE® evaluates ingredient hazards. EWG Verified® requires ingredient transparency and health-based screening. GREENGUARD Gold measures chemical emissions into indoor air. UL Formaldehyde Free Validation specifically addresses formaldehyde emissions. Together, these independent standards provide overlapping verification across areas no single certification covers alone.

ORGANIC
STANDARDS

GOTS Global Organic Textile Standard certification badge — Avocado Green Mattress finished-product license CU863637, verifying organic integrity from farm through manufacturing.

GLOBAL ORGANIC
TEXTILE STANDARD

GOTS is our most important certification — and what truly separates us from "natural" brands. "Natural" is unregulated. "Organic" is not. GOTS requires restricted chemical inputs, full supply-chain traceability, and independent audits from farm through finished product, and is recognized by the USDA as a standard under which textiles may be sold as organic. Critically, GOTS certifies finished products — not individual components. Every Avocado mattress holds a GOTS finished-product license (CU863637). If it's not GOTS certified at the finished-product level, it's not organic.

GOTS CERTIFICATION

GOLS Global Organic Latex Standard certification badge — verifying Avocado's organic Dunlop latex contains 95% or more certified organic raw material by total weight.

GLOBAL ORGANIC
LATEX STANDARD

GOLS certifies that our latex contains 95% or more certified organic raw material by total weight (CU863637), with permissible limits for harmful substances, emissions requirements, and strict controls on polymer and filler content. It is a material-level certification — it verifies the latex, not the finished mattress. That is why GOLS should always be paired with a GOTS finished-product certification. One without the other leaves the finished product unverified.

GOLS CERTIFICATION

USDA Certified Biobased Product label — verifying biobased content derived from renewable biological sources in select Avocado personal care products.

USDA CERTIFIED BIOBASED

The USDA Certified Biobased Product label verifies that a product's content is derived from renewable biological sources — plant, animal, marine, or forestry feedstocks — displacing the need for petroleum-based chemicals. Our certified biobased products include our Grounding Dry Body Oil (100% biobased), Snoozy Bath Soak with Magnesium Flakes (99% biobased), and Supercharged Reishi Body Melt (100% biobased).

ECO
STANDARDS

Climate Label Certified badge — Avocado Green Mattress independently verified for five consecutive years of greenhouse gas emissions measurement and reduction.

CLIMATE LABEL CERTIFIED

The Climate Label requires annual measurement of Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions, science-aligned reduction planning, and independent verification. Avocado has been Climate Label certified for five consecutive years. Since 2021, we have reduced absolute emissions by 48% — independently verified, not self-reported. Our climate funding represents the verified cost premium of certified organic inputs over conventional equivalents: emissions avoided at the source, not offset after the fact.

UL Solutions Zero Waste certification badge — Avocado Green Mattress validated at 88% landfill diversion rate under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation program.

ZERO WASTE

Avocado is certified by UL Solutions for an 88% landfill diversion rate, validated under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation program. Diversion is driven primarily by recycling, organics recovery, reuse, and donations — tracked by material stream across both our Fullerton and Tecate facilities. Our target is 90% diversion (UL 2799 Silver) by the end of 2026.

Responsible Wool Standard certification badge — verifying Avocado's organic wool sourcing meets progressive land management and animal welfare requirements across Himalayan grazing operations in northern India.

RESPONSIBLE WOOL STANDARD

Our wool is certified to the Responsible Wool Standard — developed by Textile Exchange, certified by Control Union under certificate CU 1126022. RWS audits animal welfare and land management at the farm, requiring the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, progressive grazing, and an outright ban on mulesing. A product cannot carry the claim unless it contains 100% RWS-certified wool. Ours does. RWS verifies welfare, not organic status. Our wool holds organic certification separately, under the Canada Organic Regime, certified by the Sustainable Agriculture Promotion Society across three Internal Control System units in Himachal Pradesh.

OUR ORGANIC WOOL

Responsible Down Standard certification badge — verifying Avocado's down sourcing meets Textile Exchange animal welfare and traceability requirements, with a strict ban on live plucking and force-feeding.

RESPONSIBLE DOWN STANDARD

Our down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) by Textile Exchange (CU863637), which verifies that down and feathers come from farms meeting rigorous animal welfare, traceability, and ethical sourcing requirements — including a strict ban on live plucking and force-feeding.

EWG Verified certification badge — confirming Avocado Green Mattress products meet the Environmental Working Group's strictest ingredient transparency and health-based safety standards.

EWG VERIFIED

EWG Verified® requires full ingredient transparency and finished-product screening against strict health-based criteria. Every ingredient must be publicly disclosed and evaluated against EWG's most rigorous safety standards. EWG Verified® products are prohibited from using harmful chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, PVCs, and PFAS "forever" chemicals. Avocado's full product listings are publicly accessible in the EWG database. Learn more about verifying nontoxic claims.

EWG Verified®

MADE SAFE certification badge — verifying Avocado Green Mattress finished products have been screened against thousands of substances known to harm human health, aquatic life, and ecosystems.

MADE SAFE

MADE SAFE is a human health and ecosystem-focused certification that applies to a wide variety of everyday products, including mattresses, pillows, and bedding. Every ingredient is evaluated for human and environmental harm, including toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. When you see the MADE SAFE seal, you can trust that the product is made without the intentional use of more than 15,000 harmful substances and meets the highest standard for safety and transparency.

76 CERTIFIED PRODUCTS

GREENGUARD Gold certification badge — verifying Avocado Green Mattress products meet strict VOC and chemical emission limits for bedrooms and children's sleep environments.

GREENGUARD GOLD

GREENGUARD Gold certifies finished products against strict limits for chemical emissions into indoor air — the strictest tier in the GREENGUARD program. Every Avocado mattress, topper, pillow, protector, foundation, and bed frame is certified and fully assembled in a controlled emissions chamber against limits UL Solutions recommends for children's rooms and other sensitive environments. Every certified product is listed in the UL Solutions SPOT database.

MORE ABOUT GREENGUARD

UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification badge — independently confirming Avocado Green Mattress products contain no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors.

FORMALDEHYDE FREE
VALIDATION

Formaldehyde-based resins are widely used in adhesives and engineered wood. The National Toxicology Program classifies formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen, and it is a recognized respiratory irritant. UL Formaldehyde Free Validation independently verifies under UL 2884 that Avocado products do not emit formaldehyde or its precursors above defined limits — through an audit of safety data sheets, attestation from every component and chemical supplier, and emissions testing. Every validated product is listed in the UL Solutions SPOT database.

CLAIM VERIFICATION

eco-INSTITUT certification label — applied to Avocado's natural rubber latex as a testing requirement within GOLS certification, confirming emissions and polymer content standards.

ECO-INSTITUT

The eco-INSTITUT label applies to our latex, not the finished mattress. It is a testing requirement within GOLS certification, confirming that our latex has been independently tested for hazardous emissions and pollutants, and that its polymer content is natural rubber rather than synthetic latex. For finished-product verification, we rely on our six independent finished-product certifications.

VEGAN
STANDARDS

Vegan Action certification badge — verifying Avocado's vegan mattress and select bedding products contain no animal products or byproducts.

VEGAN CERTIFIED

Our vegan mattress and select bedding products are certified by Vegan Action, independently verified to contain no animal products or byproducts. In place of wool, our vegan mattress uses a generous layer of GOTS-certified organic cotton batting as its natural flame barrier — meeting federal flammability standards without chemical flame retardants or animal-derived materials.

VEGAN CERTIFICATION

PETA Approved Vegan badge — certifying Avocado's vegan mattresses, pillows, and mattress protectors are free of animal products and byproducts.

PETA APPROVED

Our vegan mattresses, pillows, and mattress protectors are PETA-approved vegan — independently certified as animal-free products made without wool or any animal-derived materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

At minimum, look for GOTS finished-product certification — it verifies the entire mattress is certified organic, not just individual materials. Beyond that, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold each test for different substances through different methodologies. No single certification catches everything. The most thoroughly verified sleep environment is one checked by multiple independent standards simultaneously.
GOTS finished-product certification. It covers more ground than any other standard in the category — verifying organic integrity across the entire supply chain, from farm through manufacturing, and certifying the assembled mattress rather than individual components. Other certifications test for specific substances or emissions; GOTS governs what is permitted to enter the product in the first place. If a mattress is not GOTS certified at the finished-product level, it is not organic, regardless of how it is marketed.
No certification certifies a mattress as non-toxic. The term has no regulated definition and no certifying body issues it as a standard. Different certifications answer different questions: GOTS governs which inputs are permitted, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I lab-tests against limits for harmful substances, MADE SAFE® screens against a hazard list, and GREENGUARD Gold measures emissions into indoor air. A product verified against several independent standards has been examined from more angles than one verified against a single standard. Ask any brand using the word non-toxic which certification supports the claim, and whether it resolves to a public registry.
Natural is unregulated. No federal agency defines it for mattresses, no third party audits it, and no certification body enforces it. Any brand can use it without restriction. Organic is different — when backed by GOTS finished-product certification, it means the entire mattress has been independently audited from farm through manufacturing, annually renewed, and publicly verifiable in a database.
It means the entire mattress — not just the cotton, not just the latex — has been independently certified. Most certifications in the mattress category apply to individual materials. A finished-product certification covers materials, processing, manufacturing, and the supply chain behind every component. GOTS and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 are the leading finished-product standards in the mattress category.
GOTS certifies the finished mattress across the entire supply chain — from farm through manufacturing. GOLS certifies organic latex at the material level only. A brand can hold GOLS certification for its latex without the finished mattress being certified organic. GOLS without GOTS means you know the latex was organic when it left the farm — not what happened after, or what else is in the mattress.
No. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is a lab-testing standard that screens for harmful substances — formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, pesticide residues — against human-ecological thresholds. It does not certify organic supply chain integrity. GOTS certifies organic integrity but does not lab-test the finished product for residual substances. They test different things. Both matter.
Class I is the most restrictive OEKO-TEX® category, set for products used by babies and toddlers — where the margin for chemical exposure is smallest. Certification applies to the finished product, and to earn it every component must meet those limits, not just the cover or comfort layers. Avocado holds Class I across every adult mattress, crib mattress, pillow, and topper (certificate 24.HUS.86422) — to our knowledge, the first American mattress brand to do so.
For GOTS, search the public GOTS database at global-standard.org using the brand name or license number. A legitimate finished-product license will appear with the certifying body, scope, and validity period. For OEKO-TEX®, use the label check tool at oeko-tex.com. For GREENGUARD Gold, search the UL Solutions SPOT database. If a brand cannot provide a license number that leads to a public database entry, the certification claim cannot be independently verified.
No. GOTS explicitly prohibits polyurethane foam, memory foam, chemical flame retardants, and adhesives between comfort layers in certified finished products. A mattress containing any of these materials cannot hold a GOTS finished-product license. If a brand markets a mattress as organic while using polyurethane foam, it does not hold GOTS finished-product certification.
No. GOLS certifies latex as a material — it verifies that the latex contains 95% or more certified organic raw material by weight. It does not certify the finished mattress. A brand can hold GOLS certification for its latex and still build that latex into a mattress containing polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, or other unverified inputs. GOLS should always be paired with a GOTS finished-product certification. One without the other leaves the finished mattress unverified at the product level.
Yes. Avocado screens for PFAS substances across adult mattresses, crib mattresses, toppers, pillows, and waterproof mattress protectors. No detectable amounts have been found. Full results — including the complete substance list, methodology, detection limits, and findings — are published publicly in our Help Center.
Our Organic Crib Mattress holds every finished-product certification in our portfolio, including OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I — the most restrictive tier, set for products used by babies and toddlers. It was included in our PFAS screening with no detectable amounts found. The dual-sided design provides firmer support for infants and softer support for toddlers. Certification covers the assembled crib mattress, not individual components.
No. Avocado uses GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex as its primary comfort and support material. Polyurethane foam is a petroleum-derived material prohibited under GOTS finished-product certification. Our mattresses are also made without memory foam, fiberglass, chemical flame retardants, and adhesives between comfort layers — comfort layers are needle-tufted by hand with fabric ribbons. Organic wool serves as our natural flame barrier, meeting federal flammability standards without added flame retardant chemicals.
Most mattress brands hold one or no finished-product certifications. Some hold GREENGUARD Gold, which tests for airborne emissions but does not verify organic sourcing, ingredient transparency, or harmful substance screening. Some brands certify individual materials under GOTS or GOLS but do not hold a finished-product GOTS license — meaning the mattress itself has not been verified, only a component inside it. Every Avocado mattress holds six finished-product certifications, each testing through a different methodology and against different exposure pathways. Ask any brand you are comparing us against which certifications they hold, at what level, and whether the claim resolves to a public registry.
Avocado's total verified emissions for 2024 were 17,396 tCO2e across Scope 1, 2, and 3 — the most recent independently verified year. Since 2021, we have reduced absolute emissions by 48%, verified under Climate Label Certification for five consecutive years. Our primary climate strategy is material substitution: replacing petroleum-derived inputs with certified organic alternatives at the source. Our $1,010,079 in annual climate funding represents the verified cost premium of certified organic inputs over conventional equivalents — emissions avoided at the source, not offset after the fact.
Every Avocado mattress holds six finished-product certifications: GOTS (CU863637), OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I (24.HUS.86422), MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde Free Validation. Each is independently audited, annually renewed, and publicly verifiable. At the material and supply-chain level, we also hold GOLS and FSC (latex), RWS (wool), RDS (down), OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN, and Fairtrade. At the company level, we are Climate Label Certified, a Certified B Corporation, and members of 1% for the Planet.
