Many brands use the word "organic" to describe a single material inside an otherwise conventional product. Others offer a certified organic option alongside a lineup built with the very materials they claim to avoid. Some use "natural" — a word no federal agency defines, no third-party audits, and no certification body enforces. And some replace polyurethane foam with plant-based bioplastics and call it progress. Avocado is different. Every mattress we make — from crib to California King, from Extra Firm to Ultra-Plush — is GOTS-certified organic at the finished-product level, independently verified against six overlapping health and safety standards, and made without polyurethane foam, PLA bioplastics, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass. Understanding the difference is simple. A finished-product certified organic mattress means the entire product — every material, every layer, the assembled mattress itself — has been independently verified under GOTS. A mattress described as "made with organic materials" may certify only one input, such as the cotton or latex, while the remaining components go unaudited. A "natural" mattress carries no certification requirement at all. These are three fundamentally different claims, and the gap between them is where unverified chemical inputs, synthetic additives, and unaudited supply chains live.

Where most mattresses use polyurethane foam, we use GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex — made with ≥95% certified organic latex, the highest standard. Our Dunlop latex is sourced from co-owned farmer societies and processing facilities in India and Guatemala, as well as from sources in Asia, and is processed in GOLS-certified organic facilities operating under the USDA's National Organic Program. It is also FSC® certified, verifying responsible forestry practices at the source.

Latex configurations vary by model. The Firm uses 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex (D65 / 14–19 ILD, soft) in the comfort layer. The Extra Firm shares the same 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort layer but uses a different coconut fiber configuration, delivering an even firmer feel (available on a separate page). The Medium features two layers of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex — 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65 / 14–19 ILD, soft) and 1 inch in the base (D65), totaling 3 inches. The Plush uses 5 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the pillow-top layer (D65), 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65), and 1 inch (D65) in the base. The Ultra-Plush combines 3 inches of FSC®-certified Pure Talalay® latex (not GOLS-certified) with 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, for a total of 6 inches (available on a separate page). No chemical adhesives are used to bind the layers — every mattress is needle-tufted by hand, in up to 24 locations.

Our Dunlop and Talalay latex is independently certified to eco-INSTITUT® standards at the material level. Like every material in our mattress, our latex is also covered by the same finished-product certifications that verify the complete mattress: GOTS, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free. The open-cell structure of Pure Talalay® promotes superior airflow, helping regulate temperature throughout the night. Every Avocado mattress includes a layer of pure, naturally crimped organic wool (1 ounce per square foot) beneath the organic cotton cover. Sourced from free-grazing sheep and independently certified to the Responsible Wool Standard by Textile Exchange, our wool contains no additives, synthetics, or blended materials — no rayon, no polyester, no chemical flame retardants. 

Wool's complex natural structure does remarkable work: it wicks moisture, regulates temperature in both warm and cool conditions, resists odor, and acts as an all-natural fire barrier that meets federal flammability standards without chemical treatments. Its natural crimp provides bounce, body, and soft support. In the Ultra-Plush, wool works in concert with silk and mohair to create a multi-fiber luxury comfort system — each fiber contributing a distinct performance characteristic that synthetic materials cannot replicate.

Our mattress cover is made from organic cotton in a soft, natural color, blended with 3% elastane for functional stretch required for tufting and enhanced durability, and is fully compliant with GOTS standards. Responsibly and ethically sourced from India, this fabric is quilted over generous layers of organic wool, silk, and mohair — creating the visibly plush, inviting surface that distinguishes the Ultra-Plush from every other mattress in our line. A thin, non-woven backing layer prevents natural fibers from shifting or working through the outer cotton over time. This backing meets GOTS accessory requirements. Reinforced edge seams are double-stitched for added durability, and four heavy-duty upholstered handles make the mattress easy to rotate or move. (GOTS License: CU863637).

Our patented seven-zone innerspring system (U.S. Patent No. 11,627,813) uses between 684 coils in a Twin and 1,379 in a Cal King, each individually wrapped so it responds on its own. Four of the seven zones reinforce the perimeter — both long sides plus the head and foot — for consistent edge-to-edge support throughout the life of the mattress. The other three vary firmness by body region. It is engineered and manufactured by Avocado, not sourced from a third-party supplier.

In our Firm, Medium, and Plush, four coil types are placed across three wire gauges. The firmest 14-gauge coils run through the center hip and lumbar zone where the body needs the most support, and across the head and foot for end reinforcement. 15-gauge coils fill the two largest zones, carrying the shoulders at one end and the legs at the other, so the shoulder settles in rather than being propped up. 16-gauge wire is used twice: narrow, high-tensile border coils along both long sides, and wider, softer coils nested between every other row, which blend the firmness change from one zone to the next so the transition is gradual rather than an edge you can feel. Because the head and foot zones are identical, the mattress is built to be rotated regularly and wear evenly. 

Each coil floats within food-grade, non-woven polypropylene for airflow and responsive, body-contouring support, and every coil is pocketed under compression, so it arrives preloaded and supports from the first ounce of pressure rather than needing to be broken in. Zoning this precise only works if every coil stays exactly where it's placed, and the bond between pocket rows is what guarantees it: each gauge locked in its zone, the transition coils held between rows, for the life of the mattress. That bond is a hot-melt adhesive — the same EVA-based chemistry as everyday hot glue — and a functional accessory permitted under GOTS. It's UL® Formaldehyde-Free validated, and we publish every component because we chose a certification that requires it — Waxes (CAS 8002-74-2), Resin (CAS 8050-26-8), Antioxidant (CAS 6683-19-8), EVA Polymer (CAS 24937-78-8). Then we test the assembled unit, not just the materials in it. The innerspring is covered by all six of our finished-product certifications — GOTS, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, UL® Formaldehyde-Free, and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I, the strictest tier, held to the limits set for products safe for infants.

Most mattresses bond their comfort layers together with chemical adhesives: a faster, cheaper process that introduces synthetic compounds into the layers closest to where you sleep. We don't use adhesives to keep everything together. Instead, every Green Mattress is needle-tufted by hand at our Fullerton, California, facility: a long needle drives a fabric ribbon through the full depth of the mattress and caps each end with a soft wool rosette, mechanically anchoring every layer in place. The result is a mattress that retains its shape, support, and material integrity over time — no off-gassing from bonding agents, no bonds that weaken with nightly use. It's one of the most labor-intensive bedmaking methods and a hallmark of quality.

Your Green Mattress works flat. It just doesn't have to. The Avocado Adjustable Bases raise your head and feet to the angles your body actually asks for, elevated enough to help ease snoring, reflux, and back tension, or perfectly flat when flat is right. Float lightly in the zero gravity position. And where most bases are bare black steel built to be hidden, this one is designed to belong: clean lines, real presence, and a cover of 100% organic cotton canvas. PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are synthetic chemicals used industry-wide for waterproofing, stain resistance, and flame retardancy. They persist in the environment and the human body, which is why they're called "forever chemicals." We don't use chemical treatments or chemical flame retardants, and we validate that claim with lab testing.

Our 2026 independent third-party program covers 679 individual PFAS substances — up from 320 in 2024 — across our organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex, crib mattress core, and every component of our Waterproof Mattress Protector. Testing was performed by Intertek, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, using targeted LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methods at a detection limit of 10 parts per billion for most substances. The result across every component tested: none detected.

Some industry certifications screen a smaller panel — around 80 compounds — and rely on a 50-ppm total-fluorine threshold, roughly 5,000 times less sensitive than our per-substance limit, and don't publish the underlying results. Avocado publishes the full Intertek reports, substance by substance and component by component, because transparency builds trust. A law label is a legally required tag describing the interior filling materials of a mattress. Few companies share this before purchase. At Avocado, we have always believed differently. Inside every Avocado Green Mattress: natural latex foam rubber, organic wool, an individually wrapped coil spring unit, and a fabric cover of organic cotton and elastane (which provides stretch and recovery in the knit cover). Assembled in Fullerton, California, with domestic and imported materials. Not inside any Avocado Green Mattress: polyurethane foam, memory foam, adhesives between comfort layers, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or PFAS. Read the law label for every Avocado product.

If any product that bears the Good Housekeeping Limited Warranty Seal proves to be defective within two years from the date it was first sold to a consumer by an authorized retailer, Good Housekeeping will refund the purchase price or $2,000, whichever is less, or, at Good Housekeeping’s sole discretion, repair or replace the product.
