FAQ
A latex pillow is filled with natural rubber latex — derived from the sap of Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees, not petroleum. Natural latex has an open-cell structure that compresses and rebounds rather than breaking down under repeated use, unlike polyurethane foam which degrades permanently. It comes in two main forms: shredded latex (adjustable, softer feel) and solid or molded latex (consistent, uninterrupted support). Dunlop and Talalay are two different processing methods that produce meaningfully different feels — denser and firmer for Dunlop, lighter and more buoyant for Talalay. Not all latex pillows are created equal — and many aren't pure latex at all. Some latex pillows on the market blend a shredded latex core with synthetic polyester microfibers as the outer fill, then market the result as a "latex pillow." The latex component may also be uncertified — described as "natural" without independent verification of how it was grown or processed. Avocado latex pillows contain no synthetic fill of any kind. The fill is either GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic kapok, or FSC-certified Talalay latex — nothing petroleum-derived, nothing synthetic. Every pillow in this collection also holds OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I and GOTS finished-product certifications, meaning the complete pillow — not just the cover or one component — has been independently tested and verified. That's a meaningful difference when you're spending most of your night breathing directly into your pillow.
Yes — for most sleepers, natural latex is one of the highest-performing pillow fill materials available. Its open-cell structure provides immediate responsiveness: it compresses under the weight of your head and rebounds as you move, without the slow-sink delay of memory foam or the flat, unsupportive feel of compressed polyester. Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and mold — properties inherent to the material, not added through chemical treatments. For sleepers who run warm, prefer a responsive rather than conforming feel, or want a pillow that holds its loft over years rather than months, latex is a strong choice. The main variables are Dunlop vs. Talalay processing and shredded vs. solid fill — each combination produces a meaningfully different feel.
Yes. Latex rebounds immediately under pressure rather than compressing slowly, making it well-suited for side sleeping — it holds the head elevated and the spine aligned without allowing the head to sink below shoulder level. The Avocado Green Pillow in the Side Sleeper shape is designed specifically for side sleepers, with elevated loft to accommodate shoulder width. The Molded Latex Pillow is a strong choice for side sleepers who prefer consistent, non-adjustable support — its single-piece GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex core holds its shape under the weight of the head without collapsing.
Yes. Natural latex has an open-cell structure that promotes airflow rather than trapping heat — a property inherent to the material, not achieved through gel infusions or cooling treatments added to compensate for poor breathability. Avocado latex pillows are also encased in GOTS-certified organic cotton, which wicks moisture away from the skin rather than holding it. The combination of breathable latex fill and organic cotton cover means these pillows regulate temperature naturally, without synthetic cooling additives.
Both are derived from natural rubber tree sap but processed differently. Dunlop latex is poured into a mold and baked — the result is denser, heavier, and more resilient, holding its shape under sustained pressure. Talalay latex is poured, vacuum-sealed, flash-frozen, and then baked — the result is lighter and more open-cell, with a softer, more buoyant feel. Seven of the eight pillows in this collection use GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex: the Green Pillow, Molded Latex, Mini Molded Latex, Mini Pillow, Toddler Pillow, Wedge Pillow, and Travel Neck Pillow. The Pure Talalay Luxury Pillow uses FSC-certified Talalay latex for a softer, more plush feel.
GOLS — Global Organic Latex Standard — is the only internationally recognized certification for organic latex. It verifies that the latex material is derived from certified organic rubber tree plantations and processed without harmful chemical additives. It is a material-level certification for the latex component itself. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 are the finished-product certifications — verifying the entire pillow as it arrives in your home. Seven of the eight pillows in this collection use GOLS-certified organic latex (license CU863637), verifiable at global-standard.org. Every pillow also holds GOTS and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I finished-product certifications.
Every pillow in this collection holds GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I as finished-product certifications — verified across the complete pillow, not just individual components. OEKO-TEX Class I is the most restrictive classification available, independently verified by Hohenstein (certificate 24.HUS.86422) and designed for products used by babies and toddlers. Seven of the eight pillows are also made with GOLS-certified organic latex (license CU863637). The majority of the collection additionally holds MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold certifications. All certifications are independently audited and publicly verifiable at global-standard.org and oeko-tex.com.
Significantly longer than conventional pillows. Polyurethane foam and synthetic polyester compress permanently under repeated use — conventional pillows typically need replacement every one to two years. Natural latex rebounds rather than collapsing, maintaining its support over years of consistent use. Avocado's adjustable shredded latex pillows can also be restuffed through a built-in zipper as needed. Additional fill is available here. Using an organic cotton pillow protector will extend the life of the cover and fill.
Less often than a conventional pillow. The standard advice to replace pillows every one to two years applies primarily to synthetic polyester and foam fill — materials that compress permanently and lose support relatively quickly. Natural latex doesn't behave the same way: its open-cell structure rebounds under pressure rather than collapsing. Signs that any pillow needs replacing: it no longer recovers its shape after use, it has developed permanent indentations, or it can no longer provide adequate loft for your sleep position. For Avocado's adjustable shredded latex pillows, loft can be refreshed by adding fill through the built-in zipper rather than replacing the pillow entirely. Additional fill is available here.
Never machine wash or tumble dry a latex pillow — latex tears and distorts when agitated wet or exposed to high heat. For shredded latex pillows: spot clean the outer cover with cold water and mild soap, hang dry. Do not machine wash the latex fill. For molded latex pillows: remove the cover and machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water; hang dry the cover only, never the latex core. Always follow the care label on your specific pillow. An organic cotton pillow protector reduces how often cleaning is needed and extends the life of the fill.
