FAQ
Avocado organic pillows hold five independent finished-product certifications — the same stack applied to our mattresses: GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold. These certifications verify the finished pillow as it arrives in your home, not individual materials inside it. OEKO-TEX Class I is the most restrictive classification available, independently verified by Hohenstein (certificate 24.HUS.86422) and specifically designed for products used by babies and toddlers. GOTS certifies the entire finished product through independent third-party audits from the farm through the finished product — it is not a material-level claim. No other pillow brand, to our knowledge, holds all five simultaneously. Every certification is independently audited and publicly verifiable at global-standard.org (license CU863637) and oeko-tex.com (certificate 24.HUS.86422).
No PFAS were detected in Avocado pillow testing. We screen for 320 PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity using LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methodologies — the same testing protocol applied to our mattresses, toppers, and crib mattresses. Full results, including the complete substance list and methodology, are published in our Help Center. Most pillow brands have never tested for PFAS, let alone published the results. We did both.
No polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic polyester fill, fiberglass, chemical flame retardants, PLA bioplastics, or chemical adhesives. Conventional pillows are typically filled with shredded polyurethane foam, memory foam, or synthetic polyester — petroleum-derived materials that trap heat, resist airflow, and break down over time as the foam cells collapse. Some brands have moved from petroleum-derived foam to plant-based bioplastics like PLA — a partial improvement, but still a processed synthetic polymer. Avocado uses unprocessed natural fibers instead: certified organic latex, kapok, and cotton. Learn more about our organic materials →
The difference is structural, not cosmetic. Certified organic latex — derived from rubber tree sap — has an open-cell structure that compresses and responds immediately, without the heat retention or slow-sink feel of memory foam. Kapok fiber, harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree, is hollow at the core, giving it an exceptionally light, airy loft relative to its weight. Organic cotton breathes rather than insulates, wicking moisture away from the skin rather than holding it. Together, these materials create a sleep surface that adapts to how you sleep rather than resisting it — responsive without being rigid, supportive without trapping heat. There's also a durability dimension. Polyurethane foam degrades — the cells break down under repeated compression, which is why foam pillows go flat. Certified organic latex maintains its structure over years of use. Luxury, in this context, is what happens when nothing is working against you.
Yes. The Avocado Green Pillow and Mini Pillow are fully adjustable — they arrive generously filled for a medium-plush feel, and fill can be added or removed through a built-in zipper until you find your preferred loft and firmness. Additional fill is sold separately. The Green Pillow is also available in a Side Sleeper shape, which provides elevated loft designed to accommodate shoulder width and maintain spinal alignment for side sleepers. The fill throughout is shredded GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic kapok — not shredded memory foam or polyurethane-based AirFoam. Adjustability doesn't require petroleum-derived materials. Ours uses certified organic ones.
Our pillow lineup covers every sleep style and preference — all filled with certified organic or natural materials. The Green Pillow uses shredded GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex and GOTS-certified kapok for fully adjustable loft; it's also available in a Side Sleeper shape with elevated loft for shoulder support. The Molded Latex Pillow is a single-piece GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex core for consistent, responsive support. The Pure Talalay® Pillow uses FSC-certified Talalay latex for a softer, more buoyant feel. The Grand Luxe Pillow layers Talalay latex with premium natural fills for our most luxurious option. The Down Pillow uses RDS-certified, responsibly sourced down for an ultra-soft, compressible feel. As a general guide: side sleepers typically do best with higher loft; back sleepers with medium loft; stomach sleepers with lower loft.
The Avocado Green Pillow in the Side Sleeper shape is designed specifically for side sleeping. Its elevated loft accommodates shoulder width and supports proper spinal alignment — keeping the head, neck, and spine in a neutral position throughout the night. It uses the same certified organic fill as the standard Green Pillow (GOLS-certified shredded organic latex and GOTS-certified kapok) and remains adjustable through the built-in zipper, so you can fine-tune the loft to your exact shoulder width and mattress depth. The Molded Latex Pillow is also a strong choice for side sleepers who prefer a consistent, non-adjustable feel — its single-piece GOLS-certified organic latex core provides firm, responsive support that holds its shape under the weight of the head without collapsing. Both are GOTS and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I certified.
Yes. Avocado pillows are built with materials that naturally regulate temperature: certified organic latex, organic cotton, and kapok fiber all promote airflow and wick moisture rather than trapping heat. Synthetic foam — including the memory foam and AirFoam used in many competing adjustable pillows — is petroleum-derived and tends to retain heat by design. Our materials don't require gel infusions or cooling treatments to compensate for poor breathability. They start breathable because of what they're made from.
Yes. Our Organic Toddler Pillow holds five independent finished-product certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold. OEKO-TEX Class I is the most restrictive classification available, designed specifically for products used by babies and toddlers, requiring lab testing against the strictest limits for harmful substances including formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, and pesticide residues. The pillow contains no synthetic materials of any kind. Avocado is, to our knowledge, the first American mattress brand to achieve OEKO-TEX Class I across every pillow in its line (GlobeNewswire, January 14, 2026). Note: pillows are not recommended for infants under 12 months — consult your pediatrician.
Kapok is a natural plant fiber harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra). Each fiber is hollow at the core, which gives it an exceptionally light, silky loft — roughly eight times lighter than cotton by volume — while remaining naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold and mildew. It has the softness of silk and the airiness of down without using any animal products, making it a vegan alternative to goose or duck down. Kapok grows without pesticides and requires no irrigation, making it one of the lowest-impact natural fibers used in bedding. In Avocado's Green Pillow and Mini Pillow, GOTS-certified organic kapok is blended with GOLS-certified shredded organic latex to create a fill that is both light and resilient — the latex provides structure and rebound while the kapok provides softness and airflow.
Both are derived from natural rubber tree sap, but they're processed differently and feel meaningfully different in a pillow. Dunlop latex is produced by pouring liquid latex into a mold and baking it — a straightforward process that results in a denser, heavier, more resilient material. It holds its shape under sustained pressure, which makes it well-suited for pillows that need to maintain loft and support throughout the night. Talalay latex uses a more involved process: the liquid latex is poured, vacuum-sealed, flash-frozen, and then baked. The result is a lighter, more open-cell structure that feels softer and more buoyant — closer to a traditional pillow feel, but with the responsiveness of latex. Avocado's Green Pillow and Molded Latex Pillow use GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex — certified at the finished-product level, which is the highest standard available for organic latex. The Pure Talalay® Pillow and Grand Luxe Pillow use FSC-certified Talalay latex for a softer, more plush feel. Neither contains synthetic additives, petrochemicals, or chemical adhesives.
Significantly longer than conventional pillows. Polyurethane foam and synthetic polyester fill degrade through a process called mechanical fatigue — the cells or fibers collapse under repeated compression and never fully recover, which is why conventional pillows go flat and lose support within one to two years of regular use. Certified organic latex has a fundamentally different structure. Its open-cell network compresses and rebounds rather than collapsing, maintaining its support and loft over years of consistent use. Kapok fiber, used in Avocado's adjustable pillows, also resists the compression degradation that affects synthetic fills, and can be refreshed simply by fluffing or by adding fill through the zipper. The adjustable design of the Avocado Green Pillow also means the pillow can be restuffed as needed, extending its useful life further. Protecting your pillow with an organic cotton pillow protector will help preserve the cover and extend the fill life.
Care varies by pillow. For the Green Pillow and Mini Pillow: spot clean the outer cotton cover with cold water and mild soap — do not use bleach, and hang dry. The inner liner should also be spot cleaned only; do not machine wash latex fill. To refresh before sleep, give it a thorough fluff to redistribute the fill and restore loft. For the Molded Latex Pillow and Pure Talalay® Pillow: remove the cover and machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water; hang dry the cover. Never machine wash or tumble dry a solid latex core — latex can tear or distort when agitated wet. For all pillows, we recommend using an organic cotton pillow protector to reduce how often the pillow itself needs cleaning and to extend the life of the cover. Always follow the care label on your specific pillow.
"Organic" is a verified standard with enforceable certification requirements. "Natural" is a marketing term with no federal definition, no third-party audit, and no enforcement body. A pillow filled with conventionally grown cotton treated with synthetic pesticides can legally be called "natural." It cannot be called certified organic. When evaluating any organic pillow claim, the question to ask is: certified organic at what level? A single certified component inside an otherwise unverified product is not the same as a finished product independently tested and certified by multiple bodies. Look for finished-product certifications — OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, MADE SAFE®, GOTS — not just material-level claims on a label. Understand what finished-product certification means →
Start with the GOTS public database at global-standard.org, where you can search any brand by name or license number. Avocado's GOTS certificate is CU863637. For OEKO-TEX®, use the label check tool at oeko-tex.com — Avocado's certificate is 24.HUS.86422. For MADE SAFE® and EWG Verified®, both organizations maintain publicly searchable product databases. If a brand cannot point you to a verifiable certificate in a public database, the claim is self-reported. Independent certification exists precisely so consumers don't have to take a brand's word for it. We publish ours because we'd rather you check.
